IP Address Change (Insight RoadRunner)
 

Hello and good afternoon. I am new on this board and have been reading quite a bit about how to go about changing my IP address. I wanted to share with you guys something that I did this morning and it seemed to work. I had been using a wireless NETGEAR router and could not seem to get my IP address changed. Well, last night I unplugged my cable directly from the wall and then direct connected my computer straight to the router. I then screwed the cable back into the wall and after doing so, I could not get a connection. I called customer service and they told me that I had to power down my modem for 30 seconds and then power it back up. It was still reading my netgear MAC address. After doing this, I plugged my computer directly back into the modem and POOF, I got a new IP address. I checked it on (WhatismyIPaddress.com) I am not a computer genious by any means, but wanted share this with you guys who might have Insight. Now what I dont know is if it automatically changes when I hook up my router again or if it goes back to my old IP address.

Why is it, that I get a different IP address when my wireless router is hooked up, from when it is a direct connection from my modem?

I tried that system method of taking out the direct cable from the wall, and it worked when I had it plugged in straight to my computer with no router, I had a new IP address. But then when I plugged it back into the router it went back to the old IP address? What is the reason for this?

Also what is the difference between MAC address and IP address? How many address do I need to change to make sure Ebay can't track me and what are they called (besides IP and MAC)? I've looked everywhere and still can't seem to find the answers. Thanks for any advice.
