Small tip for cable modem business users from CMC

I've been the one asking a lot of questions on this forum and I have not given much input that may have been helpful, so hope this helps someone a little bit.

I don't want to mention any company's name because they may come here, read this message and change their tactics. Let's just say they are the biggest cable internet provider here in US. Anyways, I had a regular internet subscription with them and was able to change my IP using the standard method no problem.

When switched to business internet, they gave me this big chunk of modem and changing the IP WOULD NOT work, so I was panicking. I spent at least an hour trying to figure out why.

Turns out that if you just replace the modem, it works. Give them back the modem they provided you and use the Motorola surfboard extreme. It works perfectly now. I was about to switch back to my old home subscription if I was not able to change my ip.

I even called them up and made sure that my subscription was dynamic not static ip, and they said it was dynamic. So, for the longest time, I couldn't figure out why my IP wouldn't change using the method from the stealth book. Anyways, hope this helps someone later on.

It sounds like you had what is called a sticky IP associated to that 'big chunk of modem'. This is still classified as a dynamic IP via DHCP, since Comcast technically will evenutally release it.

With a sticky IP, it can take over 2 hours of modem being powered down to obtain a new IP. This is an approximation of Comcast's DHCP lease time.

Comcast always provides dynamic IP setting by default. It costs MORE money to have a static IP. It would show up on your bill.

Have you tried changing the IP with the new modem you received?

Oh I've had this problem solved a few months ago. Thought I would share my experiences here and how I solved it. Yea, right now it takes as long as the router and the modem to refresh to get a new ip, which takes about 4 minutes tops.

For those of us not in the know...what is CMC?

I think the OP might have just used CMC as a general acronym to represent Comcast. Comcast actually does have a product called "Comcast Media Center" that they use for their video platform. But OP was talking about Comcast in terms of an ISP provider, not for video content delivery.

The OP did not want to list name of the ISP because they think they are reading this forum...seriously doubt that. Some people are super paranoid.

But the OP did mention in his post that CMC is "the largest Internet provider in the US"

This is when I knew he was referring to Comcast. Comcast is #1, followed by AT&T, and then Time Warner...at least here in the USA.

In Canada, it might be Telus, Rogers or Bell Canada?

That's right for Canada An0nym0u$ - some provinces have specific cable providers as well - example Quebec has Videotron which does not operate outside the province. But the ones you mentioned are the biggest.
