selling after ebay member dies

If someone was using a family members info and ssn to sell and they died, could they technically keep selling if they never went over the 20K PP threshold? Just curious for future reference.

Ever hear that saying "your soul better belong to Jesus, cause your a$$ belongs to me (jail bars slamming with evil laughter)"
Dead people's Social Security numbers still in use

BTW the web is a wonderful search tool

I wouldn't use a real family members info. Theres no point in it.

Re: selling after ebay member dies

But technically they could since a 1099 is never issued?

Basically yes or no and why?

That is still considered ID theft. The IRS will show that the person is deceased and they might look into if that person shows they have a 1099 on the SSN record.

Let the person R.I.P. man !!!! FFS.

Maybe when you snuff it some can use your details etc. and reap the benefits :)

Open your eyes man, people cry everyday even after tens of years after someone passes away and then some f u c k e r like u comes along and basically p i s s e s on their grave. WTF?

F off with that kinda style man.

My thoughts on the matter X

That would be a bad idea...

I can only imagine the conversation at the funeral

'Sorry for your loss.

On a side note what was their eBay password?'

I think someone may be headed to Saint Peter real soon.....

I can already see it,
OP: "Hey Grandma, what's your SSN?"
Grandma: "Why?"
OP: "Just curious Grandma, and can I get Grandpa's SSN also"
Grandma: "Well you know back in the day...."
OP: "Dang it Grandma, just need your SSN!"

its already added to the account and you had their permission (I assume) and you do not go over, and it does not get reported anywhere, then I do not see the harm. it could have been a joint venture at the beginning....I think it is different to adding it when you know they are dying or they already died.....dont you?

I have similar dilemma with my dads bank accounts, he had a ton, and he is alive and does not use as he retired, and he practically forced me to take them, because he did not see the point in shutting them if I could use them. I used a couple on a small scale but dont need the rest and keep them open anyway....so if he croaks I wonder what the legals of it would be......

Can someone answer the OP question if possible, as I think it is actually a valid one.

Having that ssn added with permission, and if you never trigger a 1099 or any tax documents, what are potential consequences.

Re: selling after ebay member dies

The person who owns the SSN number is dead, if the IRS comes after them for taxes, how can they collect taxes on a dead person.

You might want to check with your local accountant.

Re: selling after ebay member dies

Wouldn't the person using that PP account with the SSN attached just file in their own name if its under 20K threshold since all that income is going into their own bank account?

Re: selling after ebay member dies

If nothing is reported to the IRS then there is no income to declare.
If you have a job where you get a W-2 and you don't have a lot of deductions
then you are not very likely to get audited so I wouldn't worry about it.
Try to not put a lot of money through your checking. If you do get
audited, you could just state that you buy things at garage sales and
resell them through craigslist or some place where records are not kept.

The main thing is to keep the amount below the reporting amount on pp.
I seriously doubt the IRS is interested in someone on ebay below $20K. They
set the reporting amount at $20K so that's where they are interested and even then,
they don't bother you unless you also show other reported income. There are
much bigger fish to fry.

Forum isn't meant to give tax advice - that's what financial professionals are for. Forum posts tend not to give financial advice and defer the question.

1000 thank you's @ chicago for your honest and helpful advice. The forum may not be for tax advice, but when you involve SSN's & EIN's, question of this nature will arise. We are all here to help each other, right?

A BIG LOL if you think that SSN and EIN questions are for these forums. Those questions should always be asked by experts and not on some grey area forum.

I have a feeling you already knew the answer so why ask questions or make a thread on this subject.
