PayPal Wants W9 - Claims Name Mismatch
 

Hello All,

Back in early July 2018, I received a name mismatch for PayPal because I abbreviated the business name on PayPal with the registered EIN instead of spelling it out. Just for example, let's say my business name was Buy Stuff Now LLC. I had it abbreviated as BSN LLC on PayPal. But IRS had it as Buy Stuff Now LLC for the EIN.

I went ahead and changed the business name and it cleared the limitation. However, today I received a new limitation and an email as followed:

"Action required: Update your information for tax reporting.


XXXXXXXXXX,

We’re required to submit a Form 1099-K to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) when the payments you receive through your PayPal account for goods and services exceed the applicable tax information reporting thresholds. Because the name and Tax Identification Number (TIN) we have on file doesn’t match the information on file with the IRS, we need you to update your account information.

Please follow the steps below to update this information, so we can file an accurate Form 1099-K with the IRS when necessary, and you can avoid potential account limitation in the future.
Download a U.S. IRS W-9 tax form here. Complete and sign the form.
Log in to your PayPal account.
Then, visit the Resolution Center to upload the W-9 tax form by September 15, 2018.
Important: If you don’t correct your name and tax identification mismatch, PayPal might be required to limit your account in order to comply with IRS requirements.

Helpful tips:
If you’re an individual or a sole proprietor, you’ll need to complete the W-9 with the PayPal accountholder’s legal name.
If you’re a legal entity (example - Corporation, LLC, non-profit), you’ll need to complete the W-9 with your business’s legal name.
If you have multiple PayPal accounts, you need to ensure that your name and TIN is correct for each account.

So, what do I do? The PayPal and EIN business name match up already. They are exactly the same. Both are "Buy Stuff Now LLC" so I'm pretty confused as to how there could be a mismatch. I mean, it is a stealth account. Maybe that's it? I'm not sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

almost looks as if you accidentally submitted a TIN instead of EIN

I selected EIN as the number option, and under the business information it shows EIN and then the number. Also, for the option I chose to report for taxes, I chose the EIN instead of SSN. TIN is for those who are unable to get SSNs.

ah. well it seems PayPal didn't like something about the switch and are asking for paper documentation.

your only choice is to comply..

I mean, I saw others filling out the W9 with stealth info. For example, using the PayPal stealth info on the W9 for the name, address, etc, but using the business name and EIN. I guess there's a way to do it specifically for an LLC on the W9?

Any knowledge with any of this?

you can comply in whatever fashion you'd like. I almost always comply with stealth cake info.

if you're concerned about the IRS, IMO as long as your reported numbers match with the EIN 1099K, the other stuff isn't really important. cake away my friend

Good luck OP. Like I told the other guy, it's almost impossible to get past the W9 request.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I have seen on here that people used their real business name and EIN attached to the PayPal, along with the stealth info. And it worked for them. Hoping the same for me!

It also states this on there:

Please provide the documents requested below. We'll review your account status after we receive the information we've requested.
Check email for additional requirements

Your documents need to be valid and legible.
The submitted information on the documents must correspond with the information on your PayPal account.
Documents can't be older than 6 months.
We will handle your information in accordance with our privacy policy.

To update everyone and to help others, I used my stealth name that's attached on my PayPal and my REAL business name that matches the EIN that's on both my PayPal and with the IRS. Here is there response with the W9:

Your PayPal Account Has Been Returned to Regular Standing

Our review is complete and we have returned your account to regular standing.

We appreciate your patience and thank you for your help in making PayPal the safest and most trusted online payment solution.
