PayPal Account Limited Tax ID Number, Will it Unlock After January 1st?
 

So I messed up and didn't calculate out my sales correctly and was hit last night with the dreaded TAX ID verification. I literally only had 3 or 4 items listed right now (small ones) and when the last one sold last night the seller emailed me and said he couldn't make payment because eBay told him "the seller is not accepting payments at this time." I checked my email and last night at like 10PM I got this email from PayPal.

"Reminder: action required

Your account is limited
Confirm your taxpayer status today

Because you receive payment for goods or services through PayPal, we need to confirm your taxpayer status. This verification is required to comply with US. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as well as State tax reporting requirements.

Your taxpayer status is not confirmed, so your PayPal account has been limited and currently you can’t request or receive money."


My question is, will this limitation go away after January 1st 2019? I will just have to cancel the auction and the high bidder but it is my fault for getting too close to the deadline (only three weeks away!)

Has anyone had this before? Will I all of a sudden be able to start accepting payments in January or is this account toast? This is one of my longest standing accounts so I would be devastated to lose it completely. Please help! I am normally very careful and have never come close to having this happen before. All feedback and recommendations welcome!

In years past, yes that limitation would go away on 1/1/new year.

We won't know for certain if it's going to be same in 2019 until we get to 2019, but I would assume it will be the same.

Awesome, thanks a bunch man! I will hope it goes away. I am still able to withdraw money for some reason? So should I leave money in there to pay eBay fees? Or will it not allow me to even do that? I have not tried shipping an item yet either but I would like to ship out because I don't want to stiff the buyers that purchased my items. However, if the account is toasted I don't want to pay $150 in eBay fees either.

Your account isn't toast. A tax limitation is pretty much the lightest form of limitation you can get. The only impact it has on your account is it won't let you receive any more payments in the current calendar year.

You can still send payments, pay your fees, withdraw money, and everything else you'd normally be able to do.

If I were you I'd go ahead now and pay any pending eBay fees (since you presumably won't have any more fees until next year), print shipping labels for any orders you have pending, and then after a week or two, withdraw any $ left in your Paypal. I say a week or two just in case you get an unexpected return.

Thanks for the feedback on this. I am going to go ahead and pay the eBay fees and such to keep the account active. Also pray I don't have any disputes in the time being until I can get it back up and running January 1st. I should have been a little more careful but it is an aged 4+ years account running strong. I was trying to make a little extra $$$ for Christmas and boom, hit the threshold.

Well I beg to disagree with my esteemed friends but they asked for tax id on my account when it reached $52 so I doubt it will "reset" January 1st or go away.

I just got the same thing on my account. Hopefully it resets after 1/1. I'll just move on to another account.

Man I hope so. This is my best account! So mad I let it get to that point! Praying January 1st it allows me to start accepting payments again. I was able to pay the outstanding ebay fees and also ship out a couple of items, so maybe there is Hope? Just says I can’t accept anymore payments right now.

There's plenty of hope, bud. I don't know what else I can say to reassure you. In years past it went like this : the little red notification thing in the top right corner of your PP account won't go away on 1/1/201x, but you are able to start accepting payments again on 1/1/201x. There won't be an email from PP on that day saying you can receive payments again. You'll just have to be brave enough to try accepting a payment.

Basically if you able to list anything on eBay on 1/1/2019 using your PP email as the payment method, then your account reset.

I just tried to send money to the account from another PayPal account and it said the same thing "You can't send them money, your recipient can't accept payments right now."

So it is still limited 100% apparently. I guess I have no other options?

Is this PayPal account toast? Could I not just open another PayPal account and link it to my already established eBay account that is almost 5 years old? What other options if any do I have for my PayPal account?

What makes you say that? How long would it last? It’s a legit account, but I don’t want to mess with the LLC Tax ID stuff. I’m selling off collectibles and stuff from my dad, I don’t want to pay taxes on it.

I don’t want to mess with paying taxes on it. I own rental properties and such and don’t want to give a reason to cause anymore headaches at tax time. Plus the account is 100% stealth. Nothing on it is real?

I don’t have to pay taxes because this isn’t a business. I’m liquidating my father’s old baseball cards. Most of them are sold as a loss. However again, the point of stealth is so I don’t want to mess with it. I don’t want to keep detailed records of all this stuff and worry about an IRS audit, I’m not making much money off it. I would just like to keep selling.

Again, back to my original question? Can I add a new PayPal account to this and keep it going? That’s my point of the conversation. Thanks!

As of right now if your account got the first Tax ID notification but did not receive the second notice where your account is actually "soft" limited (can't receive payments) then those accounts have reset and you can sell in 2019 as if you never received the first notice.

However, it seems the accounts that got the first and second notification (soft limitation, can't receive payment) are still limited.

I am still unable to accept payments on one of my accounts. When you try to list, its says my paypal account cannot accept payments at this time.

How long was it between 1st ad 2nd notification till soft limitation?
Did you try sending in the requested documents?

I received my first notice on 12/1 right after I received a $7.01 payment. I received my second notice on 12/31 right after I received a $5.30 payment. This account did not cross 200 items or $20K. I was hoping for the reset however as of today there's no reset. I was able to transfer all of the money with the exception of a small amount to my bank account. Also, I guess because there was not enough in the account to cover eBay fees, they initiated an eCheck for fees. I'm seriously contemplating going the LLC + EIN route but was hoping it cleared up so I didn't have to...

I’m having the same issues and thought it would reset like it did in the past. I’m thinking it was late January last year when they reset. I am also unable to pay my eBay fees because I don’t have enough in the PayPal account and I can’t take in anymore funds! Frustrating!

I check everyday and I get the frustrating "Email address cannot be used for (PP) payments at this time." message. It's 1/17 - same message. You would think this action affects their bottom line somehow by preventing people from being able to pay for items they want to buy. You would think there'd be more pep in their steps to release the people they're not sending 1099-K's. It's got to be affecting many more people than just us few posting here...

I have a very strong feeling that if accounts do reset this year, it will be on 1/27/19 which is the date they are telling users they must have their SSN added by in order to keep using their balance for purchases.

I've been monitoring my accounts closely too. The "limited" notification seems to be gone from a few but I'm still getting an error when I try to send an invoice from those accounts, so they aren't back to normal.

The only accounts I have had 100% reset on January 1st was the accounts that got requested but not limited as in, Not be able to collect more funds.

Some people report tax limited accounts getting reset end of January and as late as end of April. This was not my experience last year but we did not wait and added tax info sometime in February.

IMO, the account is toast unless you give them what the IRS wants, A tax number.

If you are just selling some random stuff, just open a new account..... ;)

In years past I had both reset. Accounts that had only had a tax ID requested, and accounts that were fully limited for hitting 200 sales.

That's why there are posts from me here saying accounts will reset - because they've reset for me several times. With that being said there have been a lot of changes to ebay, paypal, and e-com in general lately so I don't know if things will go the same way this year.

In years past if you had your account limited and were unable to receive any more funds because of hitting the IRS threshold, the account would unlock by the end of January and you can receive funds again.

Hopefully things repeat themselves this year. I am eagerly waiting for my accounts to be allowed to sell again.

I am not sure how it is an advantage for PayPal to permanently limit you from receiving payments due to IRS thresholds, as I do recall them fighting the government on these thresholds being placed on seller accounts when the IRS first came after them several years back.

Do you recall when you were allowed to sell again on accounts that were limited and unable to sell any more items for the year?

Me personally I began selling on these accounts in the end of Jan - beginning of Feb, but I wasn't exactly checking every day waiting for the limitation to be lifted like I am this year, so I am uncertain of the exact day the limitation was lifted in years past.

I do not. Most traffic comes from our business accounts so I'm in the same boat as you - I don't exactly know when I just know I was able to start receiving payments again on tax limited accounts some time in the new year.

Like I said earlier I think the 1/27/19 "confirm your info by" date probably ties into this, somehow.

Paypal does fight for sellers but when enough tax dollars have been missed out on, the government starts forcing Paypal's hand. :noidea:

I can also confirm I now have the Limited notifications in the top right of the screen disappearing from a lot of my accounts, but they are still unable to receive payments.

I also noticed if I go to the Resolution Center where it shows me my limitations, a handful of accounts have this notice:

"We’re reviewing your submissions. Thanks for helping us understand your business better. We’ll get back to you soon"
I obviously never submitted anything, so I do not know why it says I did.

This message is where the button that says "Confirm your Tax ID number" is supposed to be.

Mine still has the two confirm messages and when you click on either of them it asks me how I would like to confirm? Hope it disappears shortly.. (Im)patiently waiting...
