Thanks guys.
I should mention that you are able to sign checks over. For anyone that doesn't know how to do this, you do a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ signature of the recipient. Below that you write "Pay to the order of <Your name in print letters>" and then below that you sign your name. Most banks will allow you to deposit the check into your account without a hassle. I do an ATM deposit so they don't have the chance to say no face to face. If they send it back to you, try another bank. Also, it might help to make a friend out of one of the tellers at the bank. It is up to the banks discretion to accept or reject a signed-over check, not something set in stone.
If that wasn't clear here is how the back of check would look if the check was made out to John Doe and your real name is Sara James:
John Doe (signature)
Pay to the order of Sara James (in print)
Sara James (signature)
