Paypal Limited - Need SSN
 

My paypal account got limited this morning due to an increase in selling volume. I have to provide Photo ID, SSN, etc.. after talking to a Paypal rep he said that SSN is not required and if I submit everything else I should be fine... BUT in 2 months there is a legal documentation which all Paypal users have to sign that requires them to provide SSN. Anyone else know about this?

Did you get this in WRITING from the rep?

Doesn't sound likely. Paypal has managed to escape adhering to the Patriot Act for 5 years now due to its not-classification as a bank. But then again it could be some new interpretation of the Patriot Act. People have been seeing sporadically the SSN and DOB requirement on some new accounts. Paypal is unpredictable so it could be the case.

If this does become a reality, the main question would be will they accept EIN as a substitute. Patriot Act verification is usually specific to only SS#.

On the other side of things, you can never trust anything you hear from a paypal rep.

Regardless to be on the safe side this is something worth looking into. I think this old saying applies to this case "it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you."

No not in writing. He told me he requires SSN but backed down when I said I am not comfortable with that and said if I send in the other documents I should be good. He said something about how in 2 months they will be allowed to legally require the SSN.

Now you are saying something completely different. It went from they will be requiring to legally allowed to if they want. If you are going to start a rumor with this magnitude, you should have your story and facts straight.

What he said on the phone is that in 2 months paypal users will have to sign a paperwork allowing paypal to ask for their SSN.

Again, unless this is a WRITTEN notice, it has little credence.

Understand from our stealth point, we want facts for issues of this magnitude.

We know paypal reps have a tendency to infer info. When we analyse it, it is worthless.
