Trying to add my ITIN number, PayPal returns an error every time
 

Hello. Just recently received an email from PayPal saying that I need to add either an SSN, ITIN, or EIN. Well, I tried to add my ITIN number and it keeps saying "Sorry, we are not able to process your request. please try again later."

Now, I got this error almost a year ago when I tried to add my ITIN (I was trying to do things in advance) so this issue has persisted for a while. I tried multiple browsers on both occasions.

Could I try to add my ITIN number by clicking "update" on my social security field and replacing that with my ITIN? Or would this not work? I'd try it but I'm afraid it would make things worse.

Personally, what I think is happening is that I signed up for PayPal with just my first and last name. On my ITIN paper it says my full name. I probably need to change my PayPal name to include my middle name. But I heard they required a lot of documents (if someone here knows what they are, I'd appreciate to know) , while I can provide that, I'm posting here to see if other people experienced this problem. I probably answered my own question but I'm trying to see if there is any other solution. Or if somebody could confirm my suspicions, I'll just go through the process of changing my PayPal name.

So you got this notification a year ago and your paypal is working normally still?

That's probably because you're not a foreign national, and you don't have an ITIN. It probably recognizes the number is not an ITIN and kicks it out.

An ITIN is for an alien non resident non US citizen who is earning money in the US that needs to be declared for purposes of paying US taxes.

ITIN's are issued by special application to the IRS only, and can take up to a year to get.

It's extremely unlikely you have an ITIN.

Got a question: Does PP will request a phone verification after adding my ITIN? I´m still in the process of getting an ITIN. I want to be prepared for whatever PP wants to ask.

Now especially you will want an active phone number available when using Paypal. You can get a security check for almost anything.
