PayPal dispute opened AFTER 180 days

A buyer of mine just opened a dispute (today 1/15/18) for "Item Not As Described". It was an eBay sale from April 2017. That's right, nearly nine (9) months ago.

How is this even possible? How can this buyer open a dispute after this period of time?

The more bizarre thing is when I look at the case in the Resolution Center it gives three options:

1) Refund Buyer now and close case.
2) Show proof of refund.
3) Provide additional information which may be helpful to resolve the case.

I have tracking and Signature Confirmation showing delivery + buyers actual signature. I have already provided this to PayPal along with a statement the sale occured back in April 2017, more than 180 days ago.

Has anyone ever experienced this? I thought the time limit for most disputes (not chargebacks) is six months?

They opened a dispute with their credit card which automatically re-opens the PayPal dispute.

There is no mention that this is a chargeback. It's the first time this person has opened a dispute claiming the item was not as described. The purchase took place on 4/9/17 and the case was opened today.

I messaged PayPal and asked them why this person was able to open this in the first place after so much time has passed.

Just submit the information AGAIN. I know it may seem redundant but thats how PayPal works. Give them the tracking info again and wait it out.

Good point - might have to call them up to escalate too

American Express cards let you dispute stuff for a long time. I cringe when I have customers use them in real world situations as they take forever to pay on merchant sales and I've got disputes almost a year later from people.

Maybe they used one and the dispute opened? I've had AE disputes not show as a chargeback before.

I can certainly believe this about AMEX cards. I used to have an AMEX Platinum back in the day, but the $450 annual fee was more than I was willing to pay for what I was using at the time.

AMEX nearly ALWAYS sides with the buyer in disputes. Good for the customer, but the merchant ends up getting the shaft in most cases.

I'm not sure this dispute was a chargeback. I have had chargebacks before on PayPal, and they always state it's a chargeback. This is a regular "Not As Described" dispute. Upon checking the original transaction from April 2017, it was an "instant payment" no mention it was funded with a Credit/Debit card.

I'm just a little surprized the buyer could even open a case well past six months at all.

Depending on the amount involved, I think you should call PP on this one and try to get it resolved.

No telling what their system will do to you if you let it's little bot mind go through the paces.
