received paypal payment as a gift

I'm selling phones one ebay and someone made me an ok offer. I asked him for his email so i can send him invoice but instead he sent money to my paypal account and it as a gift.

is there a scam about this? can he do chargebacks? he is from indonedia

what do u guys think? it's about 1k and on paypal it doesn't show his address.

paypal shows no seller protection either.

TGMT² 06-18-2009 01:49 PM

Would I accept this transaction?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

To many inconsistencies and you obviously have some doubts anyway.

lakeman 06-18-2009 01:56 PM

I agree, it seems very risky. If it were me I wouldn't do it either.

TermedPS 06-18-2009 01:59 PM

Just ask the buyer to wait for your invoice.
I believe there is a way to refuse/cancel/return a paypal "gift".

Unless it's just the ol' PP "IF not claimed within.....it'll be returned to sender" policy.

Better safe than sorry on a $1k sale.

Sounds like you sold an iphone 3g s or some other expensive phone.

sleepyboyz 06-18-2009 03:10 PM

I never shipped to this country or surrounding areas. How can he not showing his address on PayPal?

mefromfl 06-18-2009 08:05 PM

yeah i try to withdraw and paypal did reversal hold right away, so it's probably stolen account.

aspkin 06-18-2009 08:09 PM

Too risky for me, I would need a confirmed and verified buyer and then I would call them to make sure everything was legit.

I would even try and get them to one of my websites so I could grab their IP and verify that way.. but in any case I wouldn't accept the money.

Give it 2-3 days, the funds will be reversed.

aquariusvc 06-18-2009 08:17 PM

Do not ship to this buyer he may be a scammer

vzg 06-20-2009 01:01 AM

When I was selling high end htc pda windows mobile phones, I would frequently get scam messages referencing Indonesia. It was only when I was selling the phones though, so not sure what it was about them & Indonesia.

The ebay message would usually have something to the effect of "Will you ship to my client in Indonesia..." I finally put a line in my shipping policy "No, I will not ship to your client in Indonesia"

successsor 06-20-2009 05:09 AM

what i understand is, u afraid the buyer claim not received item rite? i think if u send the phone with tracking number, it will be no problem. isnt it? plus he pay u using gift not payment. so i wonder if he can dispute u or charge back.

Vicvelcro 06-20-2009 05:13 AM

I would leave it alone. Suppose the person calls PP and says they sent the gift to the wrong paypal user? Suppose it's somebody's kid, and mom reverses it later. Suppose any number of bad things. But I see nothing good coming from this.

nobody999 06-20-2009 05:38 PM

definitely don't go through with this.....smells like a scam.

aspkin 06-21-2009 08:31 PM

So what's the verdict mefromfl?

mefromfl 06-22-2009 04:29 AM

well like i wrote above, paypal put the money on hold to investigate and it's waiting for buyer's response.

He hasn't response yet to paypal or me so i guess it's a scam

paypal does do a good job at catching these scams.

aspkin 06-22-2009 07:30 AM

Oh I missed that, well at least that's taken care of.
