DO NOT BUY VANNILA VISA 300$ stolen

I bought a vanilla visa to order a item for a buyer on ebay.

The only site i used it on was walmart.com .

not even 24 hours later and all 300$ is used at Walgreens 15 miles away, somehow at 3 am then again at 3.15,then again at 345(i still have the card and it was locked up in the safe).

Vannila visa closed my card and is sending me a replacement. They keep lying saying they will send a email but will not send the email "you need to fill out".

Sounds like someone hacked your computer or router connection.

Happens all the time.

Thieves steal the cards at the store then open them real carefully at home and log all the info.

Then they sneak them back to the store and put them back on the racks and start checking the card website daily waiting for someone to activate them.

You can reduce this happening to you in the future by taking the card you need towards the rear of the rack and checking carefully for any tampering.

That is what i did, i am so surprised this happens 4x so far. I might just start buying them and then doing a replacement instant. It is sad they are allowing someone to spend 300$ at walgreens without the legit card. They must be cloning the card.

I cant believe that they would not even check the cameras for theft at the store it was used at. I went 30 mins out way to get there too. I think the manager is in on it because i was told by a other store that they are suppose to id for that large of amount.

The theft ring all links to the walmart and cvs near me and is used in the same store.

Up here, many stores have kept these cards behind the cashier - some even under lock-and-key - to avoid this theft I guess

I wish they did, its basicly cvs's fault and they will not replace it. Vanilla is being a dick like usual and not sending the form i need to fill out(u need report within 2 days otherwise its a pain in ass)

**** sucks that was my whole weeks pay and the days are slow and limited since of the weather :(.

Most of the cards at Walmart have tear slips, maybe switch to WalmartGift.com types?

I’ve been buying cards for years and never had this happen so either I’m lucky or my stores don’t have that kind of fraud going on.

Wow! I didn't know this was a thing; has it happened to you before TGMT?

Nah, I only buy low priced gift cards, plus the cards I buy would require a lot of work to get them out of the package for such a low amount of money.

Actually I thought it was common and most people were aware of it.

A Simple Scam

The process of stealing the money off gift cards can vary. With the simplest method, a hacker takes cards off the rack, writes down the gift cards' numbers, and scratches off the strip on the back of the cards to get the security codes.

Once he has that information, he puts replacement strips—easily available online—over the codes and exits the store.

Later, after you buy one of those cards and load money onto it, the hacker gets an alert that tells him that the funds have been loaded onto the card.

"The crooks can see as soon as someone activates the card, because they've automated all this with software that periodically checks the card balance via the internet," says David Farquhar, a unit chief within the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division who explained the crime techniques to Consumer Reports last year.
