Spectrum

Ok guys I tried calling spectrum to ask if they give me a NEW IP.

And the rep said over the phone I HAVE TO GET A NEW MODEM. THIS IS THE BIGGEST FVCKING BVLLS1TT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE.

And then she goes well you could leave your modem unhooked for 3 days and when you plug it back in it will give you a new IP.

Are they being serious?

Re: Spectrum

Sounds like you have a sticky IP

See if you can go into the modem and edit the MAC address - your IP will be linked to that.

I called the 3rd time and finally a rep said that I could leave my internet unplugged for anytime and what happens is that he said someone else could get my ip in the mean time does this make any sense?

Your other solution is to get your own DOCSIS 3.0 modem and stop using the one from Charter Spectrum. Costco and Bestbuy carries them, and they not only work better than the one they give you, but you no longer have to pay the rental fees every month. You also have a lot more control over the device and can force IP changes as needed.

Re: Spectrum

Just look for any DOCSIS 3.x Cable Modem. I like getting my stuff at Costco.

Here is an example:

It's usually hard to beat Costco on price, and if the modem doesn't work for you, it's easy to return with no hassle.

Just get dedicated IP addresses. Cheap, easy, safe.

Funny, I have that same router, the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900. I got it for around $229 I think at a Costco in the SF Bay Area. I couldn't be happier, it's the best router I've ever owned.

What I like about Costco is I can buy items there worry free, so if the item doesn't work out (which it rarely does anyway) I can return hassle free, even well past the so-called "warranty" period.

What a lot of people who have cable broadband don't know is they have no choice and pay rent on the modem/router the provider gives you, especially if you want them to enable "wifi". For example, Spectrum (Charter) charges $5.00 per month "wireless fee" just to enable wifi internet. If you don't pay this fee, the modem can only be plugged in by (ethernet) cable. No kidding.

$5 /mo might not sound like much, but that's $60 per year for something you shouldn't have to pay for. Having your own router/modem also gives you full control over the network, and isn't locked down with the providers firmware.

For example, it's long been known that Comcast Cable allows 3rd parties access to YOUR access point via a service called Xfinity WiFi Hotspot. I'm not sure you can "opt out" from this sharing, but with your own equipment, that makes it that much difficult to access.
