I'm no where near the $20,000 limit. This is some bull****. I'm not risking an EIN until I know I'm capable of the $20k. but paypal keeps claiming IRS is forcing them. Which is bull****, as nothing on the IRS policy requires paypal to ask for it, UNTIL the limits are actually reached. This is just paypal making **** up.

You can sell all the way up to 20k or 120 items and often time both before HAVING to add tax number.
No way around it. If the math projects you will hit one or the other, they ask.

No way around it. If the math projects you will hit one or the other, they ask. | I'm limited now. I'm at $11k and 175 items. At first they asked. Now, they demand.
Also, it's 200 items not 120.
I mean, the whole point of IRS requiring BOTH figures, is obviously if someone sells 200 $1 auctions, they wouldn't require a 1099K or if they sold their $20k car.

On mine it was requested when my sale number was high but dollar amount low. Provided ein as I was going to be limited. I have managed payments now and use my social security number. Couldn't provide my social to PayPal. They were also doing security reviews when withdrawing and holds till delivery and have had no issues for 14 months .
The holds were becoming frequent.

Limited as in, you cant collect more funds? Or just the red banner? Two very different things. Three warnings and then actually limited when you go over 20k.
The 20k car example does not work because you NEVER would collect 20k on paypal for a car. As as a matter of fact, it is impossible to do so in one payment.

As as a matter of fact, it is impossible to do so in one payment. | I haven't tested it yet, as I haven't had a sale since it happened... But I believe I can not receive funds. And ok, car was bad example. Lets just say a few cars. Or whatever example you want to use, of selling a few of your own personal possessions, rather than being a business. Because that's what the IRS requirement was meant for. It wasn't to catch people selling off a few personal items, but actually selling stuff to make money.

They send you a request right at 17k and then stop you just before 20k. You can easily add a Tax number or just wait until next year. At least up until now.
Paypal, no more resets.

second, whether you buy the goods to resell or sell what you have around the house, you are still selling and should report any income you make.
IRS does not expect you to make a big killing selling personal items as they figure you pay more for them but there are exceptions like gold, heirlooms,
You can always use Schdeule C to report such sales and take deductions, talk to your accountant

Just that the IRS doesn't expect a 1099K for those earnings, as the point of it was for people using paypal for business. If you get down to it, you're supposed to report money you make at a garage sale. lol tho go ahead and show me someone that as ever done that...

Not sure after so many sells if I have to update more info or not.
Managed payments has not asked for no documents as of now.
I supplied name address phone number bank info and social security number.
I suppose it was all accepted and documents were not needed or they are waiting until my sales reach the amount to where they will ask to update info

Well. Confirmed. $11k in sales, and now I can't receive anymore sales. Buyers complaining I don't accept payment.

Gotta be an easier way. I was considering doing a corp and get an EIN. I'm still relatively new to this. Each person gets their own personal EIN and SS right? I've used my SS, and I created a corp that I used an EIN from. Actually, the current EIN I'm using on my main account, is connected to a corp that was dissolved over a year ago... if not two. So it seems to work. So do they not check on things like that??

You can get an EIN. You do not get a new SS just an EIN. It is nearly impossible to change your SS.
Some people are saying paypal will ask for the entire SS number. This has not bee my experience and if it happens, I will add the EIN number for both numbers, same as we have been doing for the years for the last 4.
Paypal/amazon/manged payments etc can only ask the IRS one question, Does this number math this name? and the IRS will reply with a Yes or No answer.
That being said, it is not all that uncommon for Paypal to ask for Articles of incorporation or equivalent. Sometimes a letter of good standing from the secretary of state. We have been asked for the articles of we want to use the account balance. We have ignored for close to a year now and can only withdraw to a checking account.

[QUOTE=yankee;1027837]adding another paypal is the quickest fix.
Some people are saying paypal will ask for the entire SS number. This has not bee my experience and if it happens, I will add the EIN number for both numbers, same as we have been doing for the years for the last 4.
When I added ein I first went into PayPal account and clicked to upgrade to business
Then I could put the ein and it asked for name business name business address and business phone number. Also sole proprietship
I also was also asked for birthdate and last 4 of social. I used last 4.
Have not been asked for any documents yet. The request for tax info is gone now. So I guess they accepted the info I gave online.

After 2 weeks I upgraded to business account in PayPal. That allowed me to insert the ein
The PayPal is in my real name. Real address and real phone number and bank account.
I had a previously limited account so had to go the ein route. The banned account had my social security number.
I have moved to a different state in the USA and use my new address
After giving ein had to add business name, address, phone number, bank
Info if different from bank currently being used.
It also asked for last 4 of social-- I used last 4 of ein, and they wanted birthdate.
I used real month and real year but different day of that month .
Since doing this I have not seen the link to provide tax info as was there prior to giving them the ein.
This account and linked eBay account has been going for over a year now
