Paypal Requiring Taxpayer Status
 

Received an e-mail from PayPal after receiving the first payment (roughly $200) on the account in 3 years.

The e-mail starts: "Because you receive payment for goods or services through PayPal, we need to confirm your taxpayer status."

I haven't seen this limitation (or email) before. Account has not been used for over 3 years, when originally opened and used 3 years ago the account only received payments totaling around $500. Does anyone know why I would receive this email after the first payment?

Do I have to stop taking payments on this account?

You need to update your taxpayer number.. SSN or TIN

Is this a new mechanism targeting only certain accounts? It has always been 200/$20,000.

when the first payment is received you can accept it and enter your SSN to accept the payment, why is this account different?

To add to the OP's original question, Does anyone know if you stop using the account completely and wait till after the new year will this go away/start over if the triggering amount is a few hundred dollars or less....?
