I still have access to my email but what happens if I reset my password? This is an old account and I dont have any personal details remembered.

Although I have logged on from this computer awhile ago so I still should have some old cookies. I just forget my password and im worried about trying too many times.

You'll be asked be asked for your security questions/financial information/email confirmation code/phone code. You need to answer 2 of these correctly to reset your password.

Since you said that you don't have any personal information remembered I'm assuming you didn't set the security questions. Did you link a bank or card to your account? If you get lucky on this account you would need just that and the email code.

For future reference (and anybody else reading this), you can completely avoid this situation by setting up the security questions on your account, which you can do using this PayPal link:

If you do that, you'll only have to answer the questions and get the email code if you need to reset your password.

Ok, how long are you locked out for if you try too many times?

I can get the email code easily.

What else would they ask me?

I still have access to the bank account for deposits. However its not in the same name so I cant withdrawal but of course I still know the account details. Is that all they want?

And also im not locked out completely right? ive tried too many times and its locked me out im just wondering what that time frame is and hopefully its not code for you need to call us. ive waited close to 30mins so far.

I presume that a successful password reset would override any lock on your account.

By the way, you could have tried the reset function (just to see what you will be asked for) before you tried the password, as if a password reset attempt is unsuccessful/doesn't proceed, no changes are made and the account is exactly the same as it was before the attempt.

If you're lucky you will get asked for the bank account, but if you're not so lucky the only other option will be to get the code sent to your phone.

So besides email code, you can not pick which other method to verify? I believe I have a google voice number that is working linked. But im not sure. im pretty sure.

I am worried about doing a password reset and getting something wrong and it locking me out for good besides a phone call. ive read that can happen.

Do you know how long it locks you out if you tried an incorrect password too many times?

I don't know how long you get locked out for as it hasn't happened to me, but I'd stop doing that now and just go to the password reset screen. You can always just check the options and not proceed.

I already told you that it's any 2 of the listed options. The only way you can know for sure which ones they will be is to try it.

Thank you, I wasnt sure you ment any of those 4 or if you could pick.

Ive read 4hrs to 48hrs, but any new attempt resets the lock.

Im going to try it again in a few days, this time making a list so I dont try them again.

Does anyone know how many failed passwords before it locks you out?

im worried about the password reset, ive read from 2019 if you fail you can get locked out and need to call paypal.

I'm going to say it again: you can just check what the options are and not proceed.

As soon as you use this PayPal link and enter your email:

You are presented with a screen of the options to reset your password. If they are not to your liking, you can simply do nothing and there will be no impact on your account; there will be no "fail" to worry about. You can try it right now and you won't be harming your account.

You have absolutely no other options at this point. I'm not sure what else you want me to tell you.

You can stay locked out and potentially get perma locked (which could only be fixed by contacting PP) if you keep trying incorrect passwords or you can use that screen and learn right now if this is fixable yourself.

Because I didn't have any money in the account or linked checking account eBay tried to collect their monthly fees and payment failed. That wouldn't cause the account to get locked would it? I can see the attempt hit my bank but since it was empty it failed. Can PayPal see my name doesn't match if it's a failed attempt?
I'm waiting at least 24hrs before I try anything to be on the safe side .

If you forgot your password, you can reset your password from the top of any paypal.com page after selecting "Login."
Then enter your email address. Make sure you use the email associated with your PayPal account.
You can reset your password via text, email or phone.
