After 180 days,they want to make sure you are the owner of the account.
You can try creating another email account and use that one instead.
You mean you cannot log in with your purged Gmail account?
Paypal does not check if your email is no longer active,only when it sends email to that account and it bounces,it would then know.
But one should be able to access his Paypal account with the registered email ,in your case,it could be due to your account being restricted.

I am missing something here,you have the old gmail account which has been purged for inactivity/
Paypal considers that gmail addr as your account ID,it does not know if it is valid or not,unless it sent an email to that addr and it bounces.
But all you need is to log on with that email address,then what happens?
when you log on with that gmail,what is the message you are getting?
and how did a smart guy like you end up accepting payment when you know that gmail addr has been purged.
How did you find out someone sent you $ ,as Paypal will email you YOU GOT CASH and your gmail account has been purged?
So you did receive an email from Paypal that you received payment to the email address while still active and you did nothing but let the money sit in your account?
Only Paypal can solve your problem,good luck.

And did you get an email from Google ?that your gmail account has been purged?
If you can show both emails to Paypal,may be a human being would look into it,you know in USA,if a lawyer write a letter to a business,it must respond.
180 DAYS IS 6 months,they want to know if you are the legit owner of the account.
If Paypal rep told you money is still sitting in your account waiting for withdrawal,could you call back and ask them to withdraw for you,like transfer it to the bank account already linked to the Paypal account.?

what is the reason for suspension?
In USA,there are ways to get the money out of Paypal,but it has to be a good ,not suspended account,like sending you a check or using a Paypal debit card and move the money to that card,then you use the debit card to withdraw the fund at ATM machine or move it to a bank account linked to the debit card,it is a special debit card issued by Paypal and carries a monthly fee .
It looks like the answer is NO,as long as the account remains suspended.
