Can YOU get the chargeback, or can the chargeback be initiated by the buyer?

Both answers are yes. Of course, CAN doesn't mean you'll lose the money. Paypal accounts are never CLOSED. Also, paypal won't honor the claim if it's more than 45 days, but if it's a bank issued chargeback, most likely the money will go to the buyer.

but how would i get chargedback if bank account closed, so its like 100% theres no way to protect over their chargeback? (gettin back the money from me)

I don't think you understand how a chargeback works. All credit card companies have a 6 month agreement... that's why there is a 180 day hold when your paypal gets limited.

The way you prevent chargebacks is providing legit products and good service.

sl1pknot94 09-12-2010 04:31 PM

6 months agreement on what ?

and as i told you its just a virtual item, and alot of ppl got scammmed by them, which i didn't know

so by 6 months agreement..is it like if it passed 6 months, they can't ?

First Edition 09-12-2010 05:19 PM

You buy something with your visa card... you have 6 months to dispute the transaction with your bank. Most banks don't give you that much time. The vendor is typically liable for up to 6 months for a chargeback.

Poll closed as topic does not warrant the need for one.

Here is the deal.

A CHARGEBACK happens at the card issuing bank. Generally speaking, 6 months is the time limit for chargebacks.

Here is what happens:

1) Customer complains to their credit card issuer.
2) Credit card issuer notifies PayPal of the dispute and PayPal notifies you.
3) You will be asked for your side of the story and will have a chance to provide any supporting documentation.
4) The FINAL DECISION is made by the card issuing bank. PayPal MUST honor it. They do not have a choice.
5) PayPal deducts the money from your account.

Since your checking account is closed, they will be unable to take the money. The account will be placed into collections if it remains unpaid after a certain period of time. At that point, it MAY be reported to the credit bureaus.

oh so they would take money from the closed paypal account, ok but if its passed 6 months, they can't ? cuz i heard some ppl got chargeback after a year

rsot 09-16-2010 11:03 AM

Chargebacks are all based on what form of payment buyer used. Some credit cards can dispute a charge even 1 year later. Most do 90 days, some do 6 months.

You cannot really protect from a chargeback - Paypal's policy of shipping with tracking does offer seller some protection BUT that's why virtual items and digital downloads are frowned upon by ebay and paypal - you don't have the proof required.

If you are victim of chargeback, you will owe - paypal account can go to negative because of this. Jeffweico's post is good.

IF big amount, expect collection calls - if small amount, shrug likely will just get repeated e-mails abotu balance restoration.

All the best.

I would never sign an agreement where I had liability for 365 days... no way

IDK 09-16-2010 03:43 PM

Funny. Some guy who was just trying to scam me were asking these kinds of questions.

rsot 09-16-2010 04:28 PM

Elaborate on that

Generally, the time limit is six months. I *HAVE* heard about chanrgebacks after six months, but that is only under VERY UNUSUAL circumstances. I have never personally experienced one after six months.

I had one over a year believe it or not. Guy had item for a year, broke it, asked for replacement, I said no, his credit card company said yes

sl1pknot94 09-17-2010 07:54 AM

alright thanks all, its just that the website i sold too, alot of ppl scam them, so when they lose money, they chargeback from other people who didn't scam, so they don't close, but i hope nothing happens :)

rsot 09-17-2010 10:30 AM

Ah right Pod I found out about the nature of the 1 year+ chargeback.

When people buy an item with their credit card, there are some card companies (e.g. American Express) that have 1-2 year warranty protection. IF customer claims it is broken and he can't get it replaced, they will fight the charge claiming warranty defect.

Sucks for the seller but yes doable....

I imagine the buyer needs to jump through some hoops, but ya, they scream loud enough they will get a chargeback

I actually warranty my products. So I would have had no issue repairing or replacing. But he massively abused item. Some people expect the world. And many times get it. Ironically he tried to order more stuff 6 months later. I canceled transaction, refunded and blocked his IP from my site. He sent 10 emails asking why? He actually could not understand why I wouldn't do business with him!.... Sigh

Chargebacks like this are rare so its not really something to stress over. It may happen from time to time. Sucks, but part of ecommerce.

rsot 09-17-2010 01:23 PM

Exactly - like other stores and businesses, we are all subject to fraud =(

That's disturbing....

What are sellers supposed to do??? Offer a lifetime warranty on everything sold? Maybe I should buy my next car with my credit card!

They don't put it in their ads [thank god] but you can dispute anything you bloody please with a credit card company. No questions asked [Well, very few]

I've been ripped off a few times over the years. Robbed point blank. I had everything short of the buyers DNA on delivery slip, meaningless. If they want to do a chargeback nothing can stop them. All the card companies want to do is make sure card holder is cool with keeping card and raking up fees...

sl1pknot94 09-18-2010 12:06 PM

lol..ima stay away from paypal selling, am hearing alot of stories, well atleast i will make sure not to do any virtual items stuff lol, cuz it would suck when i spent the money and then u see negative in paypal, alright thanks all...and ohhh this is cool emote..:deadhorse:
