Paypal Refund after 60 days

I have a situation......need some advice. I've tried to refund a problematic buyer who made two payments. The second one I gave issued partial refund less S&H. The first one is so old that I can't refund it and paypal blew him off when he opened a dispute (I advised him to so I could possibly refund in a verifiable way.

Here's the issue......I'd like to be cool with this buyer. He's asking me to send him a new paypal payment as a refund for that first payment. Even if I include the original transaction ID's on this payment, I do not want to risk this buyer coming back and trying to do a chargeback with the cc company. I would rather tell him to do a chargeback now and get his money that way, even if PP hits me with a chargeback fee and the buyer getting pissed off. What do you think? An FYI........I wrote to paypal and they advised me to send him a new paypal payment. I think they're either morons or looking out for themselves for suggesting that.

Ask him what he thinks about doing a chargeback, that way you will know if he paid via cc. If he says he can't because he didn't pay with cc just send him the payment via pp.

As long as you are sending the payment back to the same email which originally sent you the payment I think this should cover yourself. No one can guarantee anything because you know you are dealing with people that are not always sensible but should he chargeback this should be easy to proove. Inclue a message with the payment thhat this is a refund for so and so

Thanks for the info.......I'm still giving this thought. I'm not getting my fees back and sending him 240 is going to cost him $10, so I'd have to add more money......I may as well talk him into doing a real chargeback and hope he doesn't rat me out to pp for the conflict of interest.

take the loss. it's the cost of doing business. why try and ruin an account to save $30-40?

Slim, if the money is in the account and ready for the chargeback........that still can screw up the account? I need schooling here.

If there's money in the paypal just refund them their money, you should be fine.

use the 'send money' instead of the refund option in my opinion. depends how badly you want back the fees

Not that badly Jim, it just seems to me that there is no point in risking a possible chargeback down the road, when it all comes out equal. I'd rather deal with the chargeback fee and sleep easy than refund the money and have this guy do a chargeback down the road. There's reason for him to do it......1) He lost some S&H fees and 2) He's trying to file an insurance claim with the post office, although all he's really trying to do is recover lost S&H chargers because I'm willing to refund the actual cost of the item. There's some tension and no one is happy, and I'm afraid to put a card in his pocket via refund and then he does a chargeback. If there is little to no risk of PP messing with my account which is legit and in good standing, with the money there for them to take out, I'm really leaning towards him going through the process of a chargeback. Since you guys are telling me otherwise, I'll probably just give him the refund but it's going to be on my mind. It's not alot of money, but I can't afford to have that money tied up when I can use it towards my business.

did something get lost in the mail that you sent?

No.......
I sent a $350 dollar hand fabricated item that arrived damaged.......I insured for $100 (Parts, not labor)

Buyer went lawyer on me and decided to send item back for refund at a cost to him of $100. I never requested he send it back. I would've refunded anyway. Buyer is pissed that I'm not pursuing insurance claim. I'm telling buyer I have no interest in pursuing claim and will take loss. He's now interested in claim to get some S&H money back. I'm offering full refund for cost of item, less original S&H or the $100 he decided to spend on his own. I'm not too happy, and buyer is not happy either. I offered buyer free replacement and shipping out of my pocket but buyer is not willing to wait and wants "Full refund". There's friction and I do have to be careful he doesn't try to play any cards that would tie up my money. I'd like to be fair, but without it costing me anymore than it already has. It's also cost him. I'd wish he would've took a replacement, it would've been less of a loss for both parties. PP is the only one making out on this deal. Thanks for all the advice man.

PP always does - sucks like that. Always worth discussing a different payment method.

why wouldn't you insure it for the full amount? you have the invoice to prove it's worth

To give the guy a break on customs, but more so because I am the person who hand makes the product, and I don't feel that any amount of receipts or paperwork would satisfy their value/worth requirements. Sort of like drawing a painting and saying it costs this certain amount. There's products out there to compare with, and mine is a pretty tangible product which involves lots of craftsmanship and has many electronic components, but I'm a small time outfit.

slim jim 09-05-2012 09:41 AM

it does not matter what you feel it's worth. if you sold it at $350 and have an invoice from ebay that it sold for $350 then it is worth $350.
you can also give a break on customs without effecting insurance value, they do not go hand in hand
