Activity: 0% Longevity: 93% | | Paypal issue :-(
A few months ago my paypal account received a negative balance, because someone decided to do a chargeback on a virtual item i sold them.
What that did is take my account balance to -£257. Now because the item was virtual, paypal did nothing to help me..
Heres the cruncher... i'm only 16 years of age, and therefore no way can i pay back £257. Not long after they gave me the negative balance, i was getting phone calls from debt collection agencies asking me for my CC number, and that the money needs to be payed back now. Obviosuly i turned them away and just told them i'm 16. Needless to say since i stated i was 16, i havn't had any phonecalls or email.
The other day i decided i wanted my account closed and emailed paypal telling them i'm only 16 and want it closed (probably a big mistake). A day later, they limited my paypal account, asking for photo ID etc. I also had an email, indirectly stating that my paypal account will be left like that until i'm 18.
Now where does this leave me? My full name, address, bank account, solo card etc are all on the account, and i can't remove or edit any of them! Should i be worried that im going to have people on my back when i hit 18? Should i close my bank account and cancel the solo card? ty for any help.
P.S I'm a United Kingdom resident.

Marine, I wouldn't worry about it. I had the exact same happen to me last year, when I was 16... expect it was about £40 worth. All I did was close the bank account and CC linked to the account.
The issue lies here - have you put your real information on it?

You will easily be able to set yourself up another PP account in the future.
However, the worry is your real details were on the account. It's very likely that paypal will simply send the debt collectors round, to pick up the payment. If they keep pestering you, it will probably be worth your while just paying of the money, as tough as it may seem.
But might just save you from even worse financial/legal... ****.

Not really an option to pay it.. i don't work and student's dont have much money :O
I'm petty sure the debt collectors can't do anything as i'm only 16.. maybe someone can correct me?
P.S i havn't heard a peep from the debt collectors since i told them i was 16.

Just decided i'm going to get a part time job, and pay it back. I really don't want any debt when i hit 18, so i might aswell play it safe.
Quick question.
I want to open another paypal account. Now the name i used on the currently limited account wasn't my full name. My full name is xxxx xxxx xxxx i only used the first and last name.
If i was to open a new account, could i open it as xxx xxxx ( first and second name ) with the same address, ip etc as the old account? my full name will be on the credit card and bank so that shouldn't be an issue.

What Paypal looks for when linking accounts is your IP address, Mailing Address, Phone number, credit card, and bank account. They don't care about the name.
If you pay off your debit with Paypal, they'll release your account.

Marine;
For now--If it were me, I'd start over--new info/i.p. addy like aspkin refers to..
Then, down the road-when you get going--pay them, and thats it..
IF theyre calling a cell, or land line--get the number changed..
P.S. I really admire you starting so young.. Kudos..

Thanks for the reply.
Well, i don't know how i could verify another paypal account, as i only have one address, phone # etc. I am currently on a contract with BT Broadband, and have a Static IP. Do you know if they would change my ip, if i rung them and asked?
I forgot what i needed to verify a paypal account, is it just a bank account + phone verification? If so would i be able to ⊗⊗⊗⊗ my address, and still have a verified paypal?

Ok well i just got someone to send me £90, and paypal wouldn't let them send it to my account... thats got right on t*ts now.. they want money off me, yet won't let me receive any?!!!!
I've had it with paypal.. don't think i want another account! What i want to know is if they really can do anything to me if i just leave a negative balance in my account, forever.
I'm closing my bank acc & cc that are on the paypal next week.. i mean really, what can they do?

Marine, I can feel what you're feeling. It sucks. I started eBay and Paypal two years ago, when I was fourteen, and thankfully I was able to use funds I initially had in my bank account saved from years of allowances (in other words, parents) to pay off my debt.
What can they do? I doubt they can do much without your SSN. However, by having your real information, they have a powerful tool in tracking you down. So I would pay that off as quick as you can or convince your parents to let you become a nomad and begin traveling across America.

Thanks for the reply Xeneva.
I just emailed paypal asking, if i restore my outstanding balance to £0.00, will they close my account for me... see what reply i get monday i guess..
I got through an interview and start work in about 2 weeks, so i'll pay it off then. Hopefully they will close my account, as i'm not of legal age to use their service.

I was thinking, if you're under 18, I don't know if you can have a debt collector on your case? I was talking to my dad about it today, on an old PP I have with a neg balance, I don't think there is a lot they can do if you are still a minor.
Maybe you should just leave it, and wait until you receive a letter or further contact from the debt collectors.
