receiving gift payments

Are there any pitfalls or cons to be aware of when receiving money as a gift via paypal?

I'v sold something fairly inexpensive on gumtree and they sent the payment as a gift even though its for goods.

Seems legit but I don't want to get conned!

If it's done too many times it will cause some red flags. Best to Invoice people then get paid.

Is their pp verified? Will you ship with tracking? Is your item quite popular and subject to fraudsters? How reliable is the user?

Did they send it as a gift at their suggestion or yours?

paypal looks at these transactions too.

You should check their status carefully.:ranger:

It was their suggestion to send as a gift, hence my concern.

It will be sent tracked delivery, it's a t-shirt so not something you would associate with fraudsters.

Is there no obvious scam here then? Would I be covered if they tried a chargeback aslong as I send recorded delivery?

I recently agreed to accept a gift payment from a customer, but he mistakenly sent it as a normal payment. (bah). It works out to my benefit in the end. Given that its a new account. I don't have to take suspicious shortcuts, that could cost me later. (as some of the elite VIPs warn, us noobs!)

In the future, you can ask the customer to annotate the transaction with a statement, that says something like...
“ I knowingly release the funds and I give up my ability to claim it back”

If you have a dispute claim, this will be a part of the record.

Thanks

@yang

That's not wise getting such a note on a transaction.

Where did you get that idea?

:faint:
