First case.

Hi there.Hoping somebody here can give me some advice.

A few weeks ago I sold an item through the auction on eBay.The guy who made the winning bid informed me that he had found the same item on eBay for $10 less.He first asked for a discount (which I refused),then he asked us to cancel the deal.I told him that he can't just decide not to buy cause he's found something cheaper somewhere else and if he doesn't pay then I'll have to inform eBay.After about a week he paid up.

A few days ago I got a message saying the product was defect.I know for sure it's not defect cause every item I sell is personally checked by me before shipment. After a few emails he decided to open up a case with Paypal, which he's now escalated to a claim. This is where my problem lies.I want to react to the claim but I get 3 options before I can proceed. All involve me giving him his money back, which is all the guy has wanted since the beginning. Is there another way around this or do I have to contact Paypal personally ?.Sorry if it all seems a bit trivial but it's the first claim against me and I'm a little confused about what to do.

Cheers

Vinny

Since he already sent it to claim, ebay will make the person return the item at his/her expense. But be careful since he/she can just return a empty box or rock in a box.

You cant really do anything right now since he sent it to claim.
Keeps us updated on the outcome.

This sort of buyer is always going to cause you trouble somewhere down the road. It's better to just avoid them entirely by letting them off and just relisiting.

Thanks for the reply guys. It's just the principle of it all and how he's gone about things. If he'd just accepted that he lost out this time and got on with his life, then I wouldn't of had this problem.I think he just wanted to make me out to be some sort of con-man cause I made him buy it.I even offered to pay the guys shipping cost to send it back to me for inspection and he replied with " how can I trust you to pay me the money back " .Ah well I suppose it's all part of the eBay experience.

Cheers

YOU should have accepted that too - when I have had buyers do this kind of thing, I focus on my OTHER customers. I dont need this kind of drama and you had a chance to get rid of this kind of scummy buyer.

Now, I am NOT saying the buyer is right to do this but there is a refund policy in place and YOU know this buyer is going to use that policy....and possibly screw you over in the process (as yotano implied).

Sadly - yes. Learn from this. It sucks but in most circumstances, the buyer is always right....pp offers them a lot of incentives, eb has return policy...when a buyer gives you some kind of statement like this, best to avoid the hassle.

Cheers rsot.I'm still pretty naive with all the comings and goings on eBay.It's just that it was my first claim against me so I was a bit pissed and confused.I'll sort it out tomorrow on PP and learn from it.Thanks for all the advice people.

If I was you, I would cancel the transaction once buyer requested it no matter what reason they gave. This would not cost you a penny (only time), but will make buyer happy and you may gain a good feedback.
I don't know how much did you sell, but around $10 bucks is not worth to have a bad selling performance.

If I were you I'd message him on eBay, tell him that he can return it, and that I'd even refund him for the return shipping if he left you a positive feedback saying "Thanks". Otherwise I'd constantly be worried in case he left a negative feedback
