Any loss of sales from not offering paypal?

i can see how not using paypal would make life so much simpler, but im worried that sales will drop if I use bidpay or get a merchant account. Has any one noticed this when they gave paypal the boot and got different type of account?

Yes .

I have had it but rarely.

georgesmith 07-17-2007 09:44 PM

no, I have not. I get loads of interest, dozens of bids everytime I put up an auction. Although I have no competition on eBay :) and what I sell is in high demand.

jimmymac99 07-23-2007 03:56 PM

The Paypal Bs is a myth. You will receive the same bids and prices with or without paypal only if you have enough feedback and a good rating.

JackNoMore 07-26-2007 12:18 PM

The key is to get that feedback and good rating, and to do that Paypal does help I think.

Chris Hanson 07-26-2007 07:06 PM

I feel you don't need paypal and you don't need feedback to get bids. You account just need to be about 2 weeks old thats it. I never saw any difference by not accepting paypal versus accepting it. My sales always bang!

Paypal does increase buyer confidence

I love buying from sellers that don't accept paypal. There auctions almost always sell for less regardless of their feedback or history. If you don't have paypal you loose money unless you are the only person with an item that is in very high demand.

JackNoMore 08-06-2007 08:48 AM

Electronic payments of any kind helps I'm sure. Paypal just has the public brainwashed that they're the best, for now.

The reason paypal is so important (And it is)

Is because alot of buyers on Ebay are also sellers. They sell something, get that money in their paypal account and can easily then buy something from Ebay using the money they have earned.

So its like one massive swap shop.

The quickness of paypal, and the fact is aimed towards buyer protection is what makes people use it. And sales WILL be effected if you dont accept it no matter what.

If someone can pay instantly with paypal, so they can recieve their goods in 2-3 days and have buyer protection, or they can only pay by cheque and bank transfer, meaning waiting 7 days, and then longer for their item, what are they going to choose every single time?

JackNoMore 08-07-2007 10:50 AM

This is true, but the same exists with any credit processing agent. Now whether Paypal itself has an edge over the competition in terms of the number of payments people will accept making is a bit fuzzy yet. Sure people will "prefer" to use paypal if given the choice, but will they balk at the idea of paying through another method if it's NOT given as an option?

That being said, I've read reports of auctions going exactly the opposite way when paypal WAS the option. So it's not an exact science and probably comes down to the users preference more than anything. As said, a lot of paypal sellers are buyers and vice versa. If someone hates paypal for what they've done in the past, they're likely not going to be friendly toward using that service in the future.
