Can Paypal Legally do this??

Can paypal take money from YOUR BANK ACCOUNT into your paypal account to pay ebay fees. This morning i say a transaction FROM Bank Account to paypal of over 200 dollars and i never initiated this! can paypal do this? i never ever knew they cuold take money from my bank account and re-upload it from money i had transferred there two days earlier. Can They??

philly387 07-22-2008 01:51 PM

Yes they can do that. It is part of the agreement between ebay and paypal when you set up to pay your fees through paypal.

inezlachueca 07-22-2008 01:52 PM

ugh!! makes me sick!

philly387 07-22-2008 02:50 PM

Yeah it sucks but...you just have to do it.

thekid 07-22-2008 02:56 PM

no they cant if you are clever enough to change from the star when you register make sure you say you want to pay ebay fees by paypal so they will deduct from paypal account and if there is zero money in your account then it will go into minus -£££

philly387 07-22-2008 02:59 PM

well actually all you have to do is change your email address on your paypal account whenever ebay is deducting the money from your paypal account, then you dont ever have to pay the fees.

thekid 07-22-2008 03:22 PM

don't you think everybody would be doing that if that worked

jerkyboy1 07-22-2008 04:15 PM

the obvious thing to do is cut off your billing agreement with eBay which is linked to your paypal. This is the only way I see how paypal would have reason to go into your bank account which I don't think they should be able to do in any situation. Anyways, go to pay list under your profile in PayPal and cancel the billing agreement and that is it.

philly387 07-22-2008 04:48 PM

Well it worked for me. That is how they link accounts using your email address so just add a new one and delete the old one. But yes I would think everybody would be doing that if that worked. That is why i am doing it. Don't know why everyone else isn't.

Just cancel the direct debit set up in your online banking options.

jerkyboy1 07-23-2008 02:30 AM

switching e-mails on your paypal account will not fool them. They will still know who you're especially if you're still linked under the billing agreement.

One very important part of stopping paypal getting your money from a bank account has been omitted. You must also tell your bank, in writing, that you no longer allow paypal to access your funds.FGS, do not rely on a simple change of details on your paypal information to be enough. It is the business of any user to make sure they block paypal taking monies in the best ways possible.:p

Very dubious about a simple email address change working. Most certainly this is NOT my experience.

badebay 07-23-2008 03:29 AM

inezlachueca. i assume your not in the uk !! as here we have strict banking rules regarding electronic transfers. a third party cannot access a transfer without a direct debit mandate signed by you or sanctioned by you. If your bank accounts online, direct debits can be removed straight away. take a few hours to come into affect. then they are blocked by your bank automaticaly. Credit cards are different and its possible to do a chargeback if your funds were taken due to a problem from the 3rd party. Could be a hijacked acount or a dispute with the third party of performance. anything, I have exorcised my rights a few times. and won !!. I know that when a paypal account gets limited, they make it impossible to remove credit and debit cards. but you can thwart them through your bank, if you feel they have breached your consumer rights.

footnote: banks here do not like paypal or there policies. fact !!

philly387 07-23-2008 09:29 AM

Alright I'm going to give up on the whole changing the email address on paypal. Apparently it doesn't work for anyone but me.

jerkyboy1 07-23-2008 03:29 PM

Also, if you ever catch paypal in the process of reversing funds from your bank account call up your bank and put a stop payment on the account or a stop payment and block and they will not be able to take the money that time or ever again. The fee is like $22 but it is better then paypal stealing hundreds or thousands from you.

philly387 07-23-2008 03:30 PM

I thought you can only put a stop payment on Checks?

thekid 07-23-2008 06:49 PM

why can paypal never be stopped they are the criminals
and they do crime in front of everyones eyes
and no one wants to stop them

jerkyboy1 07-23-2008 09:40 PM

the truth is they could be busted easily if someone had the money and time to pursue it which I wish there was. Also, I don't know anything about law so I wouldn't know where to start and that is probably the basic hurdling block for most people who have ever contemplated going after paypal.

Also, you can put a stop payment on online money transfers and different typs of money transfers not just checks. You have to call up your bank and see what their fees are for such a service but with chase it is about $22.
