PP now asking for SS# on new accounts?

Well, I just made a stealth business account and they required the last 4 digits of the SS# and birth date. It said the "patriot act requires all financial institutions to verify SS#'s". WTH is this now? The funniest part is, I entered anything and it completed the makeup of the account. Has anyone else had this?

I have not opened a business PayPal account, but I hear that is you select business they will ask for ein or ssn. For personal it shouldn't be a problem. Can anyone else confirm what I said was true?

Yeah just set up a PP about a couple of hours and not asking for SSN however it is a Personal account so maybe try that route

always start personal THEN move into business territory.

I opened a business account earlier this week and they did not ask for it.

Re: PP now asking for SS# on new accounts?

There are a couple of threads about this. It seems to happen when they are suspicious of something.

Something similar happened to me a while ago when I created an Amazon account - they required a bank account on sign up. When I investigated to see what went wrong, I found the IP address I had used was in a different state from the user information I gave. That was, of course, back when I was new.

So, don't panic. It is not their policy to request an SSN for every account. At least not yet.

This is always why I told people to "be careful what you wish for" when they said PayPal should be a bank so they would have to follow banking rules. We DO NOT WANT that, because if PayPal WAS a bank, then they WOULD have to get an SSN for every US account.

Jeffweico, if pp was a bank then they couldn't do all that crap they do sellers supposedly. I hope they don't become a bank too.

Re: PP now asking for SS# on new accounts?

But the message I got said it WAS a "financial institution".

Financial institution does not necessarily mean bank. A check cashing place is a financial institution but nothing close to a bank

This is random though, When I make about 10 stealth business accounts, 1 of them come up like this. Doesnt mean though that you need to put SSN right away, just reenter paypal.com and it disappears. Youll probably see it everytime you log in but they wont really require it until you hit your 200 transaction or 20,000 mark. Then they will ask for either your SSN or EIN

Whenever PayPal/eBay asks for information they are suspicious of something. That is why I prefer to age my PayPal accounts as personal accounts maybe buy a few cheap items give it some time. Then upgrade to premier or business. The way it is now trying to cut corners on either eBay/PP is going to run you into problems.

It was happen to simply for the reason :
They giving you that massage and was asking for the last 4 digit was since when you set up the business PayPal account you choose to describe your business category as " service" and the sub category as " other" ... Witch Is why it was asking the lat 4 SS .... Correct me if I am wrong .

I am not working on any new accounts until the first of the year. But it does make sense. If you are setting up a business account here in the states. It seems like as a business they would ask for a tax ID up front. This year PayPal stealth's seem to have a hard limit of close to 200 transactions when they start restricting accounts that haven't added a Tax ID.

I will let you know in a few weeks but it may be best to go the premier account way for stealth's now. Make it look like you are a hobby seller or something. Because in the grand scheme of things if you are running a "real legit business" unless you sell really big ticket items. 200 transactions is a very small number. Don't get me wrong I am not trying to say anyone isn't but in the stealth world you want eBay/PP to perceive you in certain ways.

Wrong. I set up a clothing category, not just services.

I just went through this very thing for a new account and input a made up last 4 and birth date as well. PayPal let me continue with my account set up. However, I'm wondering if I'll receive problems as I start using this account?
