PayPal can't verify my checking account

I already had my VCC verified on my PayPal steath account, and a few days after initiating a checking account verification, here's the message I got:
"To confirm your bank account, we tried to make 2 deposits into your CITIBANK ###### checking account. The money was returned, however, because your bank does not recognize this bank account number."
It's obviously possible that the number was incorrect, but I can't check at the moment. Assuming the number is correct though, here are my questions:

-The name on my Citibank checking account is my real name and the name on my PayPal account is the same but with one letter missing (ex. Jef instead of Jeff). Could this be causing the problem?

-From what I've read on here, Citibank has worked well for those who have used it. Anyone have any problems with it? And does anyone know if it has direct debit (can't find anything on that).

-The account is only a few days old so I'm still waiting for the debit card and checks to arrive. I have to call to verify them when they do. Perhaps that's causing the problem?

Someone else mentioned that they couldn't get PayPal to verify their account until after they'd used it to make a Non-PayPal transaction. I'll be depositing some money tonight so I can buy something to eliminate that possibility.

Thoughts?

Most banks allow mismatching names, one letter shouldn't make a difference. Citibank is not one of the banks I use so I can't answer your 2nd question. If you have to call to verify your debit card it shouldn't make a difference for your bank account. I think your assumption is right, that you simply entered the number wrong.

That's news to me. Never heard of that.

USA paypal has set methods.

Wonder if it was even a USA paypal

That certainly isn't the case. Do not listen to scaremongering.

Paypal and Ebay regularly have "glitches" particularly when it comes to the verification process with bank accounts.

First verify that the account number is correct OP - Citibank has always been good for stealth

@Ebayorbust: Nice pic.

I'm checking the number in a few. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks everyone.

The number was right, never figured out what the problem was. Changed to Wells Fargo and it worked fine.

Nice that you got it solved - you verified Wells Fargo with microdeposits or instant?

Microdeposits. I decided to be patient and smart. But I can understand the people who go for the instant. It's always tempting.
And thanks to this forum, I had the opportunity to make some dick representative at Chase look like a jackass. I asked if my checking account would accept deposits with someone else's name, just to double-check what I'd read on these forums. He took on a very condescending demeanor and smirked when he said no, like I was an idiot for even thinking that. I asked him to call his supervisor to confirm that. His demeanor changed very quickly halfway through the call. Thanks for that one.
