Paypal asking for IRS tax ID, I'm not American
 

Hi all,

I keep getting prompts from paypal that IRS are asking for me to provide my tax id (ITIN) and I cant close my paypal account and my account is limited until I do so. I'm not planning to close it but I'm wondering why they keep asking for it. I also dont know what this "limit" is.

I have a UK paypal account as I'm from the UK. I have received royalty payments in US dollars before but this can't be more than maybe 5k total.

Do I have to give it to them? Why are they asking? My tax and the tax treaty waiver is already taken care of outside of Paypal.

I would talk to an accountant about this issue.

Talk to an accountant or call PayPal and explain the situation to them. I shouldn't think you are the only person this has ever happened to.

I would not spend time worrying about it, just concentrate on finding out how to fix it :)

Just to clarify, what paypal is sending you this message? That will determine what you do.
