Can I actually use a gift card attached to my Paypal account?

I have a legitimate PayPal account that I would like to use to make a purchase, but I lost my attached debit card and am waiting for a new one in the mail. If I purhase a gift card and attatch it to my Paypal account will they actually let me use it?

I have a similar problem. I have a paypal in my partner's name (she is long gone but allowed me to use her ebay and paypal account). Her credit card is about to expire and paypal has notified me I need to update or risk interruption of service. Can I use a gift card i buy online to add to her paypal?? One more detail - I am in the Philippines.
