I got a weird call from 716-242-5542
 

The guy said he was an independent paypal secondary fraud officer. He said someone paid me for an order with a stolen card (BTW he had the details on the order). He asked me if I was XXXX and I said yes. He said someone had used a stolen card to buy something from me and he just needed to confirm the item had not been returned to me. I said yes it was shipped and nothing came back. He said his name was Andrew Peterson and if I needed to contact him to call paypal at 402-735-2050 and just ask for him. He was not phishing or trying to get my passwords or anything and he sounded legit. He also said a local PD detective named blah blah might be calling me and about 2 days later the detective did and he ahd about the same questions.

Thats a Buffalo NY number. To my knowledge there isn't any office in Buffalo.

The number itself might have been masked.
Sounds legit if no phishing attempt was made and a police officer actually called as well.
What number did the police officer call from? I assume it was not the same number.

Got scam written all over it I reckon. Reel you in make you believe them on the first call then they may call back etc fishing for info.

HE knew acct details and the det. he mentioned actually called a couple days later and basically asked the same thing. anyway no big deal, if he would have asked for my moms social or my acct password or something LMAO hang up but he did not. Just curiously I called the number back from my cell phone and some lady answered cyber, cider or something investigations and field work. I think it is legit just weird. I could not find anything else online about the number. I honestly never spoke to pp investigators only claims or disputes dept historically it might be a new thing since the split.

For the local PD I have a copy of the police report cost me 30cents a page, I had to go down and pick it up to clear my dispute and that guys info is not on it but of course that detectives info is.

Oh well it may be legit then - not usually the type of thing that happens with PP reps and police calling you.... never heard of it before.

If the guy whos the target of the fraud pursues it then this is what happens.

Unless, its someone who has done it to the owner before, an ex or a kid they have problems with I guess.

The scammer probably used the credit card for other purchases as well amounting to several thousand dollars which would justify them going after that specific case.
