swbluto | 09-12-2015 01:27 AM | Issuer Identification Number Lookups - Vanillas = NO NAME BANK Just started doing some "issuer identification number" lookups at binlist.net - Free BIN/IIN Lookup Web Service. Resources such as these (Though, not necessarily this particular database is used by ebay/amazon.) can be used to identify your card and issuing bank. I was running through my regular credit and debit cards, and all had the correct issuing bank on it (Even my prepaid US bank card, which weirdly enough shows up as credit), but when I ran my vanilla mastercard (Issued by bancorp, which also issues most of the vanilla visas), the bank entry was empty. Uh oh, spaghettios, easy way to tell a "non-standard card", undoubtedly how Amazon and ebay does it and paypal seems to be catching on.
So, this is a quick way to tell the wheat from the chaff as far as cards. I'm willing to bet some gift cards have better profiles than the vanillas... (An actual bank being listed would help.)
Might just start gathering and running numbers tomorrow... |
