Does paypal start to request SSN for new accounts?

3 of my friend's paypal accounts got limited.
Some of them are brand new even without any transactions.
What paypal asked is the SSN.
Do you really to give them SSN to have a new account now?
Scary..... :mad::mad::mad::mad:

No you don't. Your friends must have done something wrong in account creation that got them linked.

Maybe they have some similar ip address linked with suspended accounts, that is mostly the case with paypal locking/limiting accounts

No, paypal is just asking for SSN now

I never been linked to a suspended acct. even though I am a suspended user. Anyways, i've been playing with paypal for a little bit trying to see what works and what doesn't. The first paypal account that I created, I believe I had too much movement and they slammed me with the SSN question. Even after I had the two (bank account and credit card verification) out of three done and I was completely verified and my limits were lifted. Well, the second paypal account I didn't have any movement and I did a premier account. Everything was perfect, no disputes and completely verified. About a week and a half into it...I got hit with the SSN question. I called and they said that they are just doing random credit checks and they need my social security number. I don't think there is a way to get around this. If anyone has any ideas, let me know but I don't think its possible. I called the Social Security Dept and asked them if paypal has the right to ask for a SSN. It sounds like anyone can ask but we as consumers have the right to say no. Unfortunately, they will hold our funds. What I don't get is this...if they are not FDIC Insured...they are not a bank. So, how can they legally have the right to ask for your SSN number? Why don't they just make you sign up with a SSN number. Why go through all the BS and then get hit with this requirement? Anyone have any ideas? I think paypal could get into trouble for this? No?

Please add your flag to your account here.
eBay/Paypal rules vari by country.
Go to your "User CP" into your "Edit Your Details" and add your correct country flag.
This helps since eBay/Paypal Rules are different by country.
Thanks

Nah, cmon now HWGA, everyone knows eBay/Paypal rules are the same for every country :)

GreenBean 01-20-2009 06:17 PM

Naughty, naughty. Rules are not the same.

Which country needs a verified paypal for sellers?

It looks like we have another influx of Newbies who will not fill out their required locations.
So you will see this message MANY times.

I thought Aspkin said he made it a requirement during the sign up process??
And I really love the smart a$$ newbies who refuse to follow the rules and then explain that you are dumb for asking them to do it.
I will be SURE and help those idiots....LOL NOT

That may be but....
Does that mean they are exempt?
No it does not.

That means that they should ALREADY KNOW BETTER.
