Paypal limitation - Balance reserve? Anyone had this?

My paypal was limited last week and I received this email this morning...

"Based on a review of your account, we've decided that reserves will be applied as follows:

- Collateral Reserve: The collateral reserve amount of: £---- has been applied temporarily to your account. This amount will be eligible for review 90 days from the date of this email.

- Minimum Balance Reserve: In this case a minimum balance of 50% will be retained on all incoming transactions up to the amount of £5.300. The minimum balance reserve will be eligible 90 days from the date of this email."

Has anyone had this before? I just phoned them and asked what is going on and the man I spoke to didn't really give me any information but he said the 90 days is worse case scenario and that he is going to get the team to review it and get back to me by email. If they were just going to hold the money I wouldn't be too worried as its not as huge amount (still a lot to me though), but the fact they are going to hold 50% of all sales I make is a joke. All the money I make comes through paypal so they are going to be holding half of the money I make for 90 days!! What can I do?

Its just a rolling reserve. It does happen, not often, but often enough for it to be fairly common.

What sort of items have you been selling over the last 2 months?

As James has said it happens when they feel that there is higher than normal risk associated with your account or they feel that there could be X amount of chargebacks.

Could be linked to Christmas sales and the risk of people charging back / wanting refunds.

I did sell a few high risk items which I haven't sold since early November due to the problems some people have been having with them within the UK (you can maybe guess what it might be), None of my customers had any problems with their order apart from one who did ask for a refund but just because they didn't want it anymore. I told him this on the phone and he seem confused as to why I had the hold on my account, I think they thought I still sold these items. I told him I sell fairly cheaper items now on eBay and thats when he said the team would review this and get back to me.

They think you're the scum of the earth basically and are concerned you're going to cost them a lot of $$$ lol.
I'd ditch the account personally unless it was on a website or something

Tbh it was exactly that item that sprung to mind.

It seems to have happened to a lot of accounts selling that item

Chances are you are just going to have to wait this out

You're lucky that you only got a rolling reserve and not a permanent limitation, especially with that item! :mod:

Still better than a permlimit. Happens rarely, but happens. Nothing much to do about it.

The paypal is also linked to my website and I've used this paypal for years now so I really want to try and keep it.

I probably only sold about 10 of them anyways, I wasn't planning on selling them long term. Now regretting this. Hopefully if they check my account and see that I haven't sold them in months they might at least remove the 50% transaction hold.

Hoverboards? :D

You can call and discuss it. Be polite yet concerned.

Tell them you are no longer going to sell hoverboards and ask if they can hold only the amount that you have already sold etc...

Sometimes paypal can be flexible and reasonable.

You got a rolling reserve for selling these items.

Some people buying them have had their house catch fire.

Sounds like you got the better deal.

Yeah the faulty ones, I bought them from a supplier who had all the safety certificates and UK certified fused plugs. I would never sell cheap unsafe items like some people have done on eBay.

Yeah I called he said they would review it and get back to me. I will call again tomorrow as well if I don't hear anything. Haven't sold them in months and don't plan to ever sell them again.

In Australia, there have been two house fires because of these items.

Each item supposedly had the "good and proper" certificates. Each fire was j a different city and item cme from different sourcd.

Just a FYI.

Yeah I understand that, but as I said I haven't sold these for months and only sold a very small amount when I initially did sell them. I think anything electronic coming from overseas can be a risk but my customers who did buy have had no complaints.

Well now you know - moving forward, you can plan accordingly for backup plans

Re: Paypal limitation - Balance reserve? Anyone had this?

Good news! Got an email this morning saying they definitely couldn't remove the holds on my account and I would have to just wait 90 days. Phoned them up again and within minutes the man I spoke to said there had been a mistake and that they would remove any holds on my account straight away. He looked through my account and realised I hadn't sold any of them in months like I told them, apparently all accounts who are still selling them have this hold on the account or are getting it soon.
