Paypal called me

For the record...I sell ref. phones on ebay, and my return rate for my category is pretty low..about 4.5%

I get a call from paypal then an email stating that my account will just be under evaluation for 90 days and that as a safety measurement paypal will be taking 3% out of every sale and holding it in reserve until the 90 days are up.

Whats this all about?
3% is alot..
My ebay account is in very good standing with 100% positive feedback.

Because of what you are selling, risky items in their eyes.

It may be a matter of perspective, but for selling phones ranging from £250 - £500 (if their smartphones your talking about), I think 3% is very generous.

Play, 4% is very low for smartphones..considering the amount of people who will try to scam you, return you a brick, and idiots who dont read descriptions and dont realize their sim cards dont fit into the phone or that the phone is not unlocked for the cellular bands (gsm vs cdma).
And I haven't even mentioned the people who will simply lie to return the item because they just dont need it anymore

Re: Paypal called me

Play said nothing about your return rate :(

I have to agree with Play though. At least they didn't give you a monthly release amount of $5k or some absurdly low number.

My misunderstanding I though play was stating 3% return rate would be already kinda high...I just realized he was talking about the money being pulled by pp

We have mentioned everywhere that if paypal accounts have spikes in sales, paypal itself will react.

I am really really glad to know you had a working phone number on your account.

Your issues might have been much more that what they are.

Agreed, perhaps play that too your advantage and give them a shout after 30 days and challenge it for removal. Id say no issues after 30 days is a fair claim to put to them.

90 day evaluation on what Im guessing isnt a new/fresh account seems a bit unfair considering it was PayPal who tried to contact OP in first place so I am saying I would call around the 30 day mark and plead the case that given the account age, the sales/feedback ratio and score that this 90 day is excessive and uneccesary.

9/10 times its automated and an actual human customer agent usually will see this and agree/remove when you call and challenge.

Cashout'

Maybe read a few more of the OPs other posts before offering this advice.

He has his hands full with issues at the moment.

Just saying....

Retailer, if you're still around, all things considered you're extremely lucky.

So many other much worse things that could have happened. I know that 3% is going to be a major nuisance, but at least they trust you enough to let you continue selling in your niche. And, at least it's only for 90 days. Some accounts have rolling reserves forever..

Such is the risk of your market - like others have indicated Retailer77...you are lucky with this account to keep existing

I was just about to say the same thing... It doesn't matter what you sell, I don't think 3% is even worth a mention. Sure, if someone sells iPhone chargers and light bulbs and makes 0.5% profit per item, it can be annoying.... But surely 3% is just "meh... another day in the office" type of thing.

Re: Paypal called me

3% is nothing
That's due to your increase in sale
I remember they put 20% on my account for 45 days and after 6 months reduced to 10% and then totally removed

3% is nothing to be honest

yankee 06-27-2016 06:01 PM

Re: Paypal called me

3% means they have a lot of faith. In my very limited experience with this it was 25% for 6 months. 15% for 6 months, 10% for six months and 5% for the last six months.

Some people never get the reserve removed.

I have not seen anyone mention one so small as 3%
