So, I got the email saying the new Google voice is available. So, I created an account and I got a new phone number. But does anyone know how to change the number or can you have multiple phone numbers? Thanks for any help.

I believe you're assigned one number per email, but I could be wrong. Has anyone used their google voice # to verify an account?

I just got my invitation yesterday and I've been playing with it all day.
(1) No, you can't change the phone number you chose when you signed up.
(2) Yes, you can add additional phone numbers to the account. But they aren't Google Voice numbers, they are supposed to be your other numbers, e.g. Home phone, Work phone, Mobile phone, etc.
I've come up with a possible "workaround" to get additional numbers.
I plan on buying a cheap prepaid mobile phone to add to the account. I will verify it when Google calls the new number, and then I'm going to use the minutes up ASAP. For some reason I feel like it won't work, I don't know why, but my hope is that Google will "reserve" the number as mine after verification and will automatically forward all calls to my primary mobile, even if the prepaid mobile is out of minutes.
Also, it appears that Google Voice is not available in some area codes. I tried to get a New York City number but they were not available. I got a Chicago number instead.

It looks like the above method won't work with a dead mobile number. It appears that Google Voice relies on the mobile phones native call forwarding feature. POOP!

I tried to get gvoice and they said it will be available in a couple of weeks. How did you get it? I get a message saying to do the invite thing and did that. I only got one from an old suspended PP account which was a grand central account.

Does this mean that every email address gets a phone # or does google say no to my number being used over and over again even though they are different accounts?

I do participate on the Google Forums so maybe that has something to do with it? If you've entered your email address here for an invite: https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/
Just a FYI, there are still thousands of people on the Google Fourms that still haven't received their invite.
GrandCentral users can upgrade to Google Voice so that's a good invitation!

Originally Posted by Hercules Does this mean that every email address gets a phone # or does google say no to my number being used over and over again even though they are different accounts? | Yes, every email address can choose a new phone number in whatever area code they wish (as long as it's available). It's absolutely free too! Google is giving away free numbers that are absolutely yours.
Something to keep in mind though, Google wants people to use the Google Voice number as their primary number. Ideally, it's the number that will be given out to your family, friends and co-workers as your new contact number. Once you do that, you can have the GV connect the calls to any phone you wish, it just has to be verified first.
It seems like on the Google Forums that many people do not want to "change" the phone number they give to people. Maybe they've just had the same number for so long it's impossible to change it without great inconvenience. What these people are doing is using the Conditional Call Forwarding feature of their mobiles to forward calls to Google Voice so it will act as their voicemail system. It's pretty rad. GV emails you when you receive VMs! You can even listen in as the VM is being left, and if you choose to do so, you can even "pick up" the call mid-message.
Google Voice is said to be working to offer number porting very soon. So at a later time we can convert our primary phone number into the Google Voice number. This way our numbers don't have to change! But yeah, number porting is not available yet.
Edit: Misspelling/Grammar

I have two different numbers. I simply re apply with the link I was given and keep getting a new invite in a couple of days. I'm going for five new numbers.
Now, I have read some interesting info a poster on Slickdeals wrote. Supposedly, you can use the new numbers on a VOIP service for free by Asterisk pbx.
Here is the link: Come Monday Googlevoice + Asterisk pbx will Allow Free incoming/outgoing USA VOIP service - SlickDeals.net Forums

'Splain me this!
Are you saying one account has multiple GV phone numbers? Or are you getting a new invite and using it on a separate account each time? Quote:

Just keep in mind you can only verify your google voice number with the same cell or landline about 3 times (even though it says two I've managed 3 numbers to one cell)

well i take that back I just squeezed out a fourth on the same cell lol, jbluntz, have you tried to link up your cell, verify, then go into the google voice, link up some random number (valid number of a walmart or something), then unlink your cell, does this clear up room for more google voice numbers?
I'm tired of borrowing my friends phones and them looking at me like I'm planning some bank robbery or something...
