Looking for UK verification phone number? This is for you!

Well, I just used this myself, and it worked like an absolute char; for both eBay and Paypal.
The answer is UK VoIP Internet Phone Service - VoIP PBX Switchboard and Telephony services
You can choose your area code to match your address, to make yourself look genuine.
And, account signup is totally free. Each phone numebr is about £2.24 I think. All you need to do is sign up an account, buy one of the land line numbers, and download the free virtual phone software.
Start it up, get ebay/paypal to call, select the verification code on the virtual phone, and you're done.

By far the cheapest "disposable" or alternative landline numbers available for the UK, with instant setup.

sorry l am having one of those thick moments ,have click onto your link to the phone site, what am l looking for ?

bertie 02-22-2008 02:14 PM

0845 numbers

can anyone tell me if 0845 numbers work with verifcation with ebay, and i have tried using a public phone box when they ring it , they ask for you to press a number 1-9 to continue and it didn't work

MissKim 02-28-2008 04:04 PM

I don't think you can use a public phone for that. If yes, I really don't recommend it.

dollybaby 03-09-2008 07:06 PM

yes ive tried the public phone box aswell lol it obviously didnt work, what do you need to get the voipfone? do i need to get a handset/headset or anything? or will my speakers work?

mantisinc 03-10-2008 12:42 PM

No, public phone box numbers do NOT work, nor do 0845. It has to be an 01 number.

Donna, all you need to do is download the free virtual phone software they provide. Plug in some earphones or something, or if you want it to come through your speakers, that's fine.

Get ebay to ring, and press the green button to pick up, and the approrpriate number on the phone to verify the call.

It's all very easy.

dollybaby 03-10-2008 12:45 PM

thanks mantisinc i will have a go with my speakers, but what is the green button to pick up, is it on the screen or do i need to have a phone?
this site is so great, i just wish id found it sooner.

dollybaby 03-10-2008 01:33 PM

ive downloaded it and ive found the green button lol nearly there i just need my email to work to get my account details from voip talktalk must be having problems:mad:

dollybaby 03-10-2008 05:29 PM

:) well ive finally got my email working and got my details for the voipfone ive bought myself a telephone no. and hey im a registered seller again, i cant believe how easy that was i thought i was off ebay for a yr but im not getting too excited i will see how long my eb acc lasts thanks mantisinc your info has been a great help.

mantisinc 03-11-2008 01:25 AM

Nice one donna!

dollybaby 03-11-2008 04:29 PM

 now voipfone have disabled my account for security reasons! god knows why, ive just phoned them and someone is going to phone me back in the am its a good job i used it already last night to register on eb

mantisinc 03-12-2008 12:02 PM

Wow...what were doing?! Did you provide real details?

dollybaby 03-12-2008 12:32 PM

yes it was my real details, it is back on now, i think it might of been because i tried to pay with a prepaid credit card and when it wouldnt work i tried again so then i used my normal card, i contacted customer services last night and they said someone would get back to me but theyve just sent me an email saying they dont know what happened but it is all ok now, so im back on voip,
do i have to cancel that no. to buy another one, or can i buy another one aswell?

mantisinc 03-12-2008 03:11 PM

Nope, NOW you can buy as many as you like, wasn't like that before though.

dollybaby 03-12-2008 03:43 PM

so is it a 1 off fee for each number or is it a monthly fee i didnt even read it all i just signed up.

mantisinc 03-13-2008 01:49 AM

I monthly fee for each number.

Sausage 04-05-2008 03:14 AM

Hi its my first post. Hello:)
I been having problems with Voipfone, they keep getting back to me to sort the problem, so I'll bear with them till they do. I think my problem has been using entropay cards and the verification has not worked for some reason....also the fact I'm in Asia.

IF and when I eventually get my UK land line number, its for verifying a PayPal account, I've read on another thread that they are checking to see if the number is registered to the actual address through a 'database'

Anyone had problems with this??

yeff 04-05-2008 04:27 AM

Hi, yes I tried to confirm my address with phone number at work, but got the message that ater checking available databases the number did not match the address I had registered. So now they are sending a letter to the ⊗⊗⊗⊗ address.

yeff 04-14-2008 01:41 PM

If anyone knows of a way around this can you PM me please, as dont want to lose another bank account if unable to verify the account with phone number.

Thanks

pauluss 04-14-2008 06:04 PM

Your UK database of landline phone numbers is listed in most cases with BT

Historically no one authority is responsible for collating ALL telephone numbers within the UK.

BT was the main source of telephone number information, (pre-2000) but their data did not include all telephone numbers from other telecommunication companies.

In 1999 an independent body called The Directory Solutions Unit was formed to collate telephone number information from nearly all UK Telecom's Providers, including

* BT
* Cable Companies
* Mobile Phone Providers etc

Directory Solutions are a sub-division of BT

It is the responsibility of this unit to collate all changes to UK Telephone Numbers - the database is called BT OSIS, which stands for the 'Operator Services Information System'.

With VOIP in the field is now in a big way - it has left matters wide open for eBay/PayPal to use this totally incomplete database to poke their noses and see if those registering/selling are who what they say they are

A system patch or automated call back closes a VOIP door quick sharp

Change your BT number or provider if you want to verify your landline for SURE

PAUL

Paul you sound kind of clued up about the telecoms industry, do you work in it or have you been researching.

I myself do work in the telecoms and It industries and agree with you that VOIP is big, it is that large that most corporations with an IP network will have VOIP pretty much fully integrated and more or less taking the main role of its telecoms service, I should know I sell and design many of them.

I will say this with OFCOMS desire to extend voip more into the home, and also with the Next Generation Network (NGN) telephone system to hit us eventually, you can pretty much say that ebay /paypals efforts to exclude anyone with an IP based telecom service will be a waste of time as they might as well also include anyone with red hair and blue eyes.

As many more homes will soon certainly be able to opt for what is called a naked DSL service, just like what some cable providers currently offer, (whereby an internet connection is the only incoming communication line for the location) the user will then be using something other than the traditional hardwired telephone service as their preferred telecom service, such a voip provider or a packet (IP) based telecoms service (ie NGN).

So if ebay and paypal think they are going succeed at restricting account sign ups based on that they only accept numbers from hardwired landlines is...well crap.

This kind of filtering / conditions of sign up will just lose them more business. They may dominate the auction area but they certainly cannot dominate modern technology, especially telecoms as we have enough wannabe associations for that including OFCOM.

Voip is usable it just needs the right methods to be applied and with the right provider

lywql 04-17-2008 01:52 AM

Is VOIP option still available for verification?

i think voipfone is just hit and miss, it failed for me on 1 paypal but it worked on the another, someone else on here has said the same.

Sora 04-19-2008 09:39 PM

Hey yeff, I am stuck on this too, going to do some research and let you know.

One question why you didn't register it with your work address as well?

I've read that with Paypal voip is hit-or-miss, is this the case with using voip with ebay as well?
