Using US phone in Canada.
 

Whenever I go to Canada I usually activate the International plan with t-mobile and it's like $0.59 or something like that. However, this time I need to use a lot of data for gps on my phone. Instead of simply buying a stand along gps unit I was thinking of buying a prepaid sim or something like that. T-mobile is charging outrages rates for data if you use your US sim in Canada.
Any suggestions?

If you have an Iphone and its Jailbroken + Carrier Unlocked you can use a Prepaid Sim.

I've the next big thing, the Samsung S4 :) and yes i'm thinking of getting a prepaid sim card. I was just wondering if there are Canadians on here that can give me solid "go there and buy this!" instead of doing a bunch of research on the topic.

Don't use the roaming feature - it can be outrageous. Prepaid phone in Canada can do the trick - but it all depends on HOW much phone use is needed.

MM78 makes a solid point that could apply to all smartphones - jailbreak from your carrier and get a sim up here

Canada is behind the 8 ball for cheap services.

rsot often mentions the hassles.
Depends on the area of Canada
My offsides lives in WA state. He uses a jail broken Samsung when he goes up to Vancouver.

He chooses to use Rogers when there.

Other options are 7-11 prepaid sim or Similicous

Or keeping it USA based, something from T-mobile or AT&T with roaming.

Thank you for all the help. I will be going to Toronto this time and will be taking my unlocked galaxy s4. T-mobile roaming is gonna cost me $10 per 1MB and I was gonna use my phone as GPS.
So, roaming with those rates won't work form me. I was really hoping that Canada has something similar to what we have here in US. You can get a t-mobile prepaid sim for $25 for a week that is unlimited.

Canada is actually getting better these days - you have quite a few carriers to explore - it can be done for $25 a week but probably not unlimited.
