International tracking numbers

Question for you overseas shippers -

When you ship to the US does your government's mail courier have a service that provides international tracking numbers?

In US, USPS has a tracking number with the country's abbreviation followed by a short line of numbers.

Not sure I understood your question but, yes Poste Italiane provides an international tracking number with country abbreviation at the end like:

RA[numbers]IT

Is this what you are asking?

Thanks -

Hrm, must be pretty standard then to have international tracking... I bought something overseas and paid extra for a tracking number. What I got was a USPS tracking #. Thought it may some weird service so checked out if there was a customs port in the tracking #'s city and no, there is not. So something isn't adding up already.

International tracking is pretty much standardized across the world thanks to decades and decades of postal treaties/agreements.

Doesn't really matter where you ship from. If you're using your country's default government sponsored postal service to ship internationally, the tracking number is going to look like "XX ### ### ### XX"

Interesting note while we are on the topic..

You know how a lot of the time USPS International tracking numbers will stop updating once they reach customs of the receiving country? Well, if you go to that country's postal service website (using Google translate if necessary) and put in your USPS Int'l tracking number, a lot of the time you'll see tracking for when the shipment left the receiving country's customs all the way up to delivery.

I learned this the hard way dealing with INR cases from foreign countries.

Yes.. and depending on the country once the package is there updates are no longer available, kinda pointless then, and may not warrant use at all. Just got the time to look up if the shipper's country does/does not have an international service and it seems so. But with this standard USPS tracking # I got the package may be coming from within the US, and that isn't exactly great. F#@$.

EDIT:

No, did not, good info. But average consumer wouldn't know either, heh.

Re: International tracking numbers

So you have a package that's supposed to be coming from another country but it has an all number tracking number, like USPS domestic tracking?

If so it could be DHL Int'l to USPS domestic for final leg.

Re: International tracking numbers

You think maybe? Literally got absolutely no fking idea right now.

Yea forsure it's a standard dom tracking #. Last tracking # update is saying awaiting acceptance at X city in US. Website says it can take 5, sometimes 10 days for delivery (coincidentally the transit time from a zone 1 to 9), elsewhere it's stated it can take 25+. They claim multiple shipping locations but from within the US?? Really?? *facepalm*

Edit

When I say last update I mean first and only so far

Re: International tracking numbers

Yeah, I think that's what it is. The shipper gets both an Int'l DHL and domestic USPS tracking number when they ship that way and I guess they gave you the domestic number.

It sounds similar to what happens when we use USPS First Class Int'l Flats. For several days the tracking updates will say "arrived at carrier facility - USPS awaiting item" (even though USPS already has it). Then when the shipment reaches Miami, NY, or Louisville (one of USPS's int'l forwarding centers) they slap a new label on the shipment and it starts getting real tracking updates.

Any chance "X city" is a port of entry by air?

I could be wrong here but I think this is a shipping company handoff. Those types of services are becoming more and more common. Maybe not DHL specifically because UPS and Fedex do the same thing with USPS. Or maybe they're using a USA warehouse. :noidea:

Re: International tracking numbers

Maybe I checked the wrong website. I dont see any ports listed in the same city as on the tracking # acceptance location.

They claim they have worked out some certain shipping logistics/methods for high % chance of guaranteed delivery. Hope it's a handoff like you said. :surrender:

In that case all good.

Accepted, now in transit. Time between order date and tracking info movement def indicates no hand off. Wouldve been better going thru int'l customs.... w/e now :surrender:
