First, I would think that when the teller typed in the zip then he/she would quickly see that the zip code does not match and would inquire you of what you would like to do from there....OR
A definate return to sender.
Goodf Luck!

When you mail any package or letter believe it or not, the only thing read by the machines are the zip codes first......say it is 000000 and that is the zip for CA, and you put Las Vegas, NV 0000000.....the package would go all the way to california and then the machines in the second process would reject the package and send it down a shot for an actual person to view and they have a computer system where they enter in the rest of the info you have on the package....123 north whatever st. Las Vegas, NV and find the correct zip a barcode spits out and they put it on the package and then send it to that correct zip.....having the incorrect zip will not get it returned to sender at all...it will just take a super long time for it to actually reach the address....Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Yes delays the entire process. Up here in Canada, a wrong postal code - as reference to your story - can delay BUT can also cause a return to sender. So it's risky - I however had have good success tweaking the individual numbers =)
Yeah, I am not sure about international shipping...but if the ONLY thing wrong with the address is the zip code....then within the US...it definetly does not get returned to sender...an incorrect zip code is OH SO VERY COMMON with people who preprint labels or letters with plain old stamps on them. The only thing that will get something returned to sender with the exception of of course a refusal to the addresse and such is more than one dramatic error....ie....street number that does not exsist with a name unknown. That is the only for sure way a package will be returned to sender within the US.
I use different zipcodes all the time, it doesn't take much longer they just forward it to the correct zipcode, if you use a NY zip it'll go through JFK and then forwarded to Nevada.
