Thankful 04-03-2012 06:45 PM

I was reading this post on a different forum may help check the full thread out!

"^^^ They want to make sure they collect; thus, they need your SS# as they'll keep it on file...if you show up as owing, they'll hold your package hostage until you pay up. If you have a printer with scanning ability, you can print out the form (provided they emailed it to you), fill out your portion, sign/date, scan it, and then email it back to them...they also need this to clear your package through customs...if you continue to import via DHL in the future, they'll have this info on record, so you don't need to do this over and over again...well, not for the next year ~ from what I was told. "

Has anyone else had DHL call them and ask for a SS# or Tax return? - PurseForum

jeffweico 04-03-2012 06:50 PM

I would call DHL and ask then WHY your SSN is required.

I am generally AGAINST giving out SSN's, but if your real information is on the package and law enforcement wants to come after you, the lack of an SSN won't stop them.

Cinderella03 04-03-2012 06:58 PM

Never use DHL again ..This is 2nd time I ever use DHL ..I got trouble first time too but I did received my packages in the end :..My packages was in the truck with courier and I got call from DHL tell me make sure I will be there for my packages I wait all day nobody shows up no call no nothing ..they I can back 2nd day they told me my package got call back to customs ..after another 4 ,5 days my package finianly came but they lost 1 of my package..

I did ask DHL they told me customs want it..

Having 6 packages come in all at once is not good. I think your packages are goners. I've used DHL for a lot of my packages and they always come in. I just had 1 package arrive today no problems.

You might want to use EMS, 7 days is worth not having your stuff confiscated.

yotano211 04-03-2012 08:43 PM

Yea I think you packages might be a goner. Iron man and hello kitty are all trade marked items. If Customs want your SSN then you might see a letter soon. I would still not hand out any SSN to DHL.

unkown5454 04-03-2012 10:00 PM

6 packages, all with trademarked logos and customs wants your SSN...haha wow. You don't even know what a trademarked logo is...that says enough right there.

MM78 04-03-2012 10:37 PM

I think the clincher is having 6 packages come in all at once. The most I've ever had come in at once either DHL or EMS is 2 and that's scary. @OP, you might want to contact your supplier and let them know what happened first, then if they are willing to resend, have them send to a different or a few different addresses but not all at once. As the others have said don't give up your SSN#. Rather to lose the merchandise than to have them take you to court.

My response was based on your initial post, where you stated that customs disagreed with the invoice value. Usually, small amounts of goods imported do NOT trigger customs duties here in the US. But 6 boxes weighing 150 lbs is not a small order. So, it would be perfectly reasonable - IMHO - to assume that perhaps there might be some money due for import duties.

However, you could also have a problem here. The items have trademarked characters on them. That means they cannot be legally imported without a letter of authorization from the trademark owner(s).

I am NOT an expert in these things, but if CBP or the FBI were targeting you, I don't think they would drop their investigation just because they don't have your SSN. I am not sure, however, what the legal ramifications would be if this is the reason they want your SSN.

You might want to ask your seller about this, but it is undoubtedly a bad situations. I mean, at best, you will owe money for these packages. At worst, well... we really don't want to think about that...

MM78 04-04-2012 12:36 AM

Awesome, Is that all 6 packages?

Cinderella03 04-04-2012 02:05 AM

I called dhl they told me all 6 boxes has been past the customs but they are still in LA ..

mrcvs1 04-04-2012 02:39 AM

If they passed Customs your pretty much solid.

Gamefreak 04-04-2012 02:51 AM

DL isnt bad at all. If you inpot too much though they will ask for SSN or EIN. If you dont give them that you will be waiting for days/weeks for your package. A simple call to provide such info will get your package released asap

stanislav 04-04-2012 03:26 AM

I am happy for you Cinderella03! :canada:

AmazonStealth 04-04-2012 03:41 AM

DHL has been hassle free for me for years. Packages ranging from under a pound to 80+ pounds.

You don't always get the forms though well for me anyway - some packages come with them forms some don't - yeah i too don't bother with them, nothing to lose sleep about.

Sounds like a UK thing. I have never ever seen or heard anything like this. Could be wrong, but I have never dealt with it.

MM78 04-05-2012 02:02 AM

US also get the green tape. Customs agents are probably 90% lazy so it's the 10% you gotta worry about. Good to hear you got your stuff Cinderella, now how much for one of those hello kitty, I got a 4yr old, lol.

teedon 04-05-2012 10:02 AM

As we said before,CA really is not a good place for the goods coming by DHL,the problem rate is much high.

Cinderella03 04-05-2012 08:00 PM

I will not use DHL again.. I use UPS for all my shipments and never got any problems..This is 2nd time I use DHL since 2006 both times had problems ..I use DHL because the price was cheaper than UPS ¥ 30 kgs and ups wants ¥39 。。I try to save like $ 40 but almost lost my whole shipment never again..

I've had 30-40 packages from DHL to Los Angeles from the same supplier and nothing, lucky? maybe. But also it might be the way the supplier packages, claims what's in the packages. I guess no one ever knows when their stuff is going to be confiscated, "knock on wood".

HurricaneHuntr 04-11-2012 11:14 AM

Had one pass cincinatti.... arrived at delivery unit and local inspector detained it....... I got his number etc.. but i'm not calling.

Annoying, now even passing cincinatti doesn't mean it will make it. No more dhl for me, i'll pay 2$ more per item than deal with these customs issues. It's just not worth the risk.

This is actually a good business lesson. Cheaper is not always better. If your business is working well, and you are presented with a cheaper option for something, it MAY be worth considering. But you have to ask yourself, what is the downside? Could this interrupt my business?

In this case, there is a time value on these items. If 2 weeks of sales are lost, that is lost profit you will never get back. So, in this case, the OP saved himself $40 on the shipping cost, but lost - probably - much more than that in lost sales.

My grandmother always used to say, "sometimes cheap is dear".

This could apply to anything...

Cheaper ink or toner that destroys your printer.

Cheaper paper that jams in your printer.

A cheaper supplier, but the goods are low quality and you have to deal with lots of negative feedback and customer complaints.

Cheaper insurance that makes it nearly impossible to file a claim.

etc...

I remember you swearing you'd never use DHL again.

I did the same, but I have still stuck with not using them. What made you decide to use them all of the sudden?

Greed..Just paying less and getting more, and 3x in a row i received customs inspected goods that delivered fine. But, the bottom line is greed.I'm not doing it again. Not worth it. I just received 10 less quantity of the same product via EMS.It sat in customs 6 days, but it arrived fine.

Cinderella03 04-12-2012 03:54 PM

I am not using DHL again..I don't need that ..I love UPS never got any problems ..
