I am going trough this same ordeal, did you finally get your packages? if so, did you call Customs to get the info and what was needed? Let me know as I am planing to call them on Monday.

I hope there is a lesson learned here to not spent this kind of money in a one shot deal and to spread out over several smaller orders.

Definitely use an escrow service.
This way you are not rolling dice with customs.
$6,000 worth of merchandise one shot is also pretty chancy, depending on what it is. For some merchandise it is probably better to have the merchandise broken into smaller shipments.
If you are dealing with a good supplier in Hong Kong/China they usually know how to make sure you will get your shipment.
