Default Ebay and Item 'watchers'

Does anyone know why some items will have a large number of watchers but but actual purchase isn't too high.
Why would genuine people decide to watch a buy it now item.
It doesnt make much sense to me or perhaps i am missing something.
I shall give a current example:
I have a BIN listing for 50 jumpers on for 30 days.
Listing is 6 days old
I have sold 5 jumpers so far
But i have 29 people watching.

My question now is : What exactly are they watching for? It isnt an auction or are they waiting for pay day so they can come back to buy?
Or is it some kind of ebay spy system?
Am confused!!

when i usually buy something i save all the ones i am interested in then go to my ebay and make the decision, sometimes it will be days or weeks before i delete the others i did not buy.

i would also like to bet that some of those watchers are you competition

Many reasons. Mildly interested so they save it. May have a few from various sellers in watch and end up buying form another. Always going to be tire kickers. I have a few items with 50 watchers and just sell a few a month. Lots, and I mean lots of people browse eBay to kill time and window shop but don't pull the trigger.

If you have 30 watchers and sell 6 thats not so bad at all

I have 3 dozen items in my watch list and I don't bother removing them if I buy or decide not to.

Short answer: Window shoppers.

Some sellers I know have reported positive results by actually buying watchers. But it can be hit or miss (I think it's who you purchase from that really counts).

Someone I buy from has been quite decent, and I've seen a slight increase in sales & traffic. Some guy on YouTube tried some experiment by gaining watchers (from his video subscribers), and he reported that it seemed to help his sales.

Could be a seller looking for more ideas on what to sell, that what i do with like a new stealth when just doing random searching if i see something that looks like a good selling item I will watch it to see how many and how much they sell for. Its a great way to get more ideas on what to sell

I have watched auctions before to make informed decisions about various products. Sometimes, I have more watchers than bidders.

You know things are bad when you have to pay for watchers! I know people pay for "followers" on twitter and other formats but honestly don't see the point of it.

What I do notice sometimes is that some of my auctions will show how many watchers and other listings won't show....

I'm guilty of that too. I often look a t items on eBay and then watch them so that i can compare prices and postage etc but quite often forget to delete them off my watch list and end up deleting about 50 items at once. The number of watchers used to be an indication on sales but with the ebay app so easily accessible I think people watch more items than they need to or are going to buy. Don't know why people would pay for watchers though as it honestly doesn't change my decision on which to buy if more people are watching an item it makes no difference to me.

Is there any way to see watchers - bidders on the items?
