Hi
New here and read the
Amazon Ghost book, have some general questions that I did not see on the forums, or the specifics I am looking for. Basically want to make sure I do not hit a pitfall or missed something.
1.) Using a Dial-Up Modem via VOIP. I have tested dialing and it seems to work. (The Cable Modem also has two telephone jacks) I have had been able to dial into dial-up. Slow, and a bit inconsistent, but it works.
My understanding is that a set up of a Computer -> Wireless Router -> Cable Modem, that the first two items (Computer & Router) have the MAC addresses read, no need to worry about the cable modem MAC (though the IP Address is an issue)
If the setup is Computer -> USB Phone Jack/Moden -> Cable Modem will the Cable Modem than be in the chain (the MAC Address or IP Address of the Cable Modem) when using it for dial-up? I would have to change the Computer MAC, the USB Phone Modem does not have a MAC, but will concerns about the Cable Modem/Phone Line still exist? If the MAC is not being read, and the IP Address is through dial up, this seems to be a good set-up.
Along the same lines, I can change MAC addresses on my Mac (Apple) for the Airport Card and Ethernet, do I need to worry about the Firewire Port and Bluetooth? They can both also used to be networked. Is removing them from the Network in the Network portion of System Prefences enough? From what I read in the book it should work.
Last thing, some dial-up numbers are seen as a Proxy, when looking at some of the
IPBurger type sites, is a Proxy to be concerned about or is Proxy servers/IP Spoofing where it is a problem?
2.) In the
Amazon Ghost Book it was mentioned that 3G/4G Routers can have their MAC addresses changed. The DataJack router
Portable Wireless Broadband Internet MiFi Card - No Contract, No Credit Checks
Is one that looked interesting. Has anyone tried it? It seems that the few mentions of the DataJack people were waiting for it to come in. Their USB Modems look interesting, but it would have the issue about not being able to change the MAC. The other unit could solve the issue about both IP Address and having the MAC changable. Was curios if there was any results yet.
3.) Virtual Machines. It looks like each account should have its own virtual machine. On cleaning the computer, how far do you have to go? Can a computer be totally erased, install a few VMs on it and neither the host or the VMs experience any "cross talk?" I may have messed this one up, and copied a VM that may have had some information in it.
To me the easiest would be remove all devices from the Network in the system on the computer and Dial-In via VOIP. Was going to actually have a dedicated external drive to boot from, with nothing on it, except for some VMs, new and not used and change MAC addresses as needed.
Thanks. Just want to make sure I had a handle on these points before going ahead to avoid any missteps and having to go back to square one.
