Default Royal Mail Barcode now required as of Oct

Just wondering what this is exactly?

Is it compulsory.

I send large letters first class and use a franking machine, do I need this new barcode thing too? If so how do i go about it? A bit confused?

Its simply the addition of a barcode to mail processed by Royal Mail (if you purchase post on the Royal Mail site direct you can see the new barcodes already in effect). They are going to begin scanning mail at various points in the delivery chain.

Far as i was told there is no change to franking machine users. Confirm with them via the Business helpline, any time i have called they have been really helpful.

For everyone else its not compulsory. They are starting the new system from October but non barcode mail can still be processed as normal. However from Spring 2016 they suggest mail without barcodes will be more expensive for them to process, and its not hard to imagine they will pass this cost on to users who dont conform.

Im hoping extra tracking may mean the end of a lot of item not received claims...but sounds too good to be true :P

A lot of business users would under declare posts e.g. They would send small parcels for the price of large letters and get away with it or send 400 parcels and only declare and pay for 100 of them, this is getting more and more common. Sometimes when I see some listings on eBay it's pretty that they're under declaring them because if you take the size of the product(Small parcel for which the actual price is £2.80), cost of the product and cost of packaging there is no way they can make a penny profit selling it for the price they've advertised it for(usually less than £3).

I send ( frank ) via Ptiney Bows so should i get in touch with them and ask them if it changes the way i do things? I would have thought they could have done some kind of software update which means the barcode if needed would be printed automatically when i;m franking?

I use ppi, I heard every address of each parcel are going to have to be entered online or atleast the postcode. Not compulsory until the spring though, I'm going to back on drop and go if you do have to enter all postcodes lol. Why are people using franking anyway? Its more expensive than ppi

How much difference is in PPI vs Franking. I use franking and these are the cost:

Letter: 0.36p
L Letter: From 0.63p
Small parcel: £2.50

With the exception of the £15/Monthly fee and maybe Ink which I never refilled yet

How does this price compare to PPI?

I know that business account owners pay £2.80 for small parcel, large letter depends on the weight.
