no, it is essential we find out what pp can do with a NI number, why? that determines what we give them, if we can give them any old set of digits and they cant check which is my thought, or if they have a database, and if they have a database is this legal, and are we entitled to withold ni from them.

Cortex you say they refused a real and a stealth ni number that doesnt tell us much, we need more info. Others who have been asked must post too. I havent been asked yet.

Another method is to refuse like Lucy, I agree, they are not entitled to it and they know it.

We need to get the trick that US guys have to bypass ssn, please inform me anyone?..Also in US what can PP do with ssn, why are they unable to check names on banks etc, but still access ssn database, is this the case, the rules may be similar for us and we need to know this, US forumers, help us out!!!

ive refused to give my NI due to data protection and ID fraud issues, so just waiting to hear from paypal now.

what do ebay and paypal use to verify the NI you give them is yours and is not made up?

paypal is asking for the NI which is illegal, because only employers are allowed to ask for that due to tax issues.

any updates from anyone in the UK?

The fact is theyre asking for it, and we cant supply it. So back to square 1.

The only thing I can think of is use the PP/ebay account until you get the limitation and then move on. This would mean, you would have low feedback on the account and you should only keep minimal amounts of money in the account.
it does matter what paypal does with the NI number, we need to find out from someone exactly why they need the NI number and how they will use it.

I think they need the NI number to do a credit check on you using experian or equafax databases, to find out which address you really live at

what more info do you need?
they asked me to enter the ni number in a form. they didnt ask me to email it to them or anything. it was just a form on the webpage. i put in ⊗⊗⊗⊗ and real info and the webpage rejected it. now im limited for a while. this is why i asked what the 180 day hold entails as i feel this is what i'll be heading for incase they insist on an ni number.

i wonder if there are any ni number generators out there which operate on a similar algorithm?

update;
ok for everyone out there, do not put a stealth ni in it will reject it as it pp may be able to verify you. We are aware of this as ssn is verified by PP US, so may be similar situation in UK although, not sure about this as ssn is different to ni, in terms of this remit.

We would welcome any ni inputting experience from other Uk forumers......

what was the balance in your paypal account before they asked for the NI and how old was the a/c?

if paypal rejected your real NI number, that may mean they are not actually checking it, have you tried again?

Default Is it over for paypal in UK?

If they are now asking for NI number and holding payments for 21 days does this mean it is over?

I can not see how we can get around this! You cant just make NI numbers up or ppal wouldnt want them as info and as for the 21 day hold it was only a matter of time till that stopped :(

And if ppal is finished for uk users what other options are there??!?! Do I just have to give up:(((

You may have to find other methods of getting paid. I have stoped useing paypal for about 4 months now every sence they reqiured ssn for the plug-in and even ebay i dont use them no more eather. but if i do i will have to find some way to get buyers to pay me useing other methods like when i did it before i used googlecheckout which it hurt my sales alot but i figerd something is better then nothing.
