Default What does OEM mean to you?

Wikipedia -- An original equipment manufacturer, or OEM is typically a company that uses a component made by a second company in its own product, or sells the product of the second company under its own brand.

So tell me this -- For example, lets use a trash bag company, say Hefty trash bags. Ok now, say I find a China factory that says they are a "a professional OEM trash bag manufacturer, located in Shanghai City. " and they produce Hefty trash bags in the pictures and information they provide.

Am I to assume that I could buy trash bags directly from them, Hefty bag logo and all, at a cheaper price and sell them on ebay without it being a 'non-authentic' product?

My question is, they say they are OEM, does that mean what they produce is the real thing?

Hope I'm making my self clear --thanks in advance.

If they are an OEM factory, they are legally producing products for Hefty. This means that they are Hefty's primary factory, or they are a subcontracted factory to fill orders unfillable at Hefty's primary factory.

thanks!

So, if I could order trash bags directly from them and sell them on ebay, do you think they would be ok with this?

Yes, you are good to go.

Honestly; something like that wouldn't raise too many flags on eBay anyways. The VERO program focuses mostly on designer clothes, shoe, jewelry, etc.

There probably aren't many people looking to replicate a trash bag, like there are trying to replicate a Coach purse or something like that.

If you are selling handbags, and gave us example of trash bags, they are most likely ⊗⊗⊗⊗. Very few designers produce their leather goods in China, but some do, and for some Made In China is legit. You need to do thorough research on the brand and the company before investing your money, to be on the safe side.

⊗⊗⊗⊗ will raise flags and you will be risking loosing your accounts. The rule of thumb: If it sounds to be too good to be true, it probably is...

Thank you for your replies --I truly appreciate your knowledge.

It's not trash bags my friend, and yes, it is a vero item with many 'non-authentic' listings.

However, if I can get the product from a true OEM source and be able to prove it to ebay if necessary, do you not think it would be ok? I have been doing MUCH research and trying to zero in on an authentic factory.

Sevn,

thank you pal.

As strange as it may seem, I'm' trying to sell totally legit products.
The only thing thats shady is the accounts I'm using to sell them.

If its authentic factory, then its OK, just make sure you have the receipt and a photo of it with sensitive info marked in your listing and you will be fine.

When forwarding anything to eBay/PayPal, you should blackout your personal info. This way they can't link you to your old accounts.

Edit: I think she is referring to CC info that might be on the receipt, or any of your personal info that could be on the receipt.

Just a tidbit of technicality: if the original company has contracted a factory to OEM for them, they probably have a clause in the contract that does not allow the factory to distribute those goods to any other buyer.

If that is the case in your hypothetical situation, and you buy the OEM goods, you are still receiving illegal goods and illegally distributing. Even if you don't have a contract with the original company agreeing to such terms, you aren't entitled to the goods from the OEM factory because they can't legally provide them, thus you are potentially liable.

Research it well and make your decision based on your findings. Exercise what's called 'due diligence', not just a quickie take-the-factory's-word-for-it option. Back it up with ancillary supporting facts.

OEM is but a few steps away from VeRo. As vic said most of the companies that allow OEM manufacturing do not allow the on-selling of the item. The line is fine and OEM items do bring an account under scrutiny.

Thanks again all!

Green, can you elaborate a little more please?

Sigh --this is getting tough! I have been spending literally weeks trying to come up with a product I could continuously sell w/o getting any heat on me.

^^^^So what's the business plan? In other words, do you want to make a lot of money, a small amount of money or 'dabble?' That's what you need to ask yourself. 'Dabble' has few benefits except of the sheer fun. (ebay/paypal & fun together nadda) So that brings it down to a lot of money or a small amount. You need to diversify. Find 2-3 items that will move on ebay. Sell them, improve the account with FB etc.
Crawl then walk then run
