Got a letter from DHL with an invoice in there stating how much the goods were in the parcel I got. It doesn't ask me to pay anything, is it common protocol for DHL to send a letter after you've got the parcel just with a summary of the product etc.

Nothing dodgy was in the box, all above board.

I think someone might have just been covering their a** with it - sometimes happens that they think "Oh I forgot to send the copy with the shipment, I better send in another just in case".

I haven't had DHL sending me invoices - unless it is to pay them ugh.

When the send you an invoice asking for a payment, the put a ref. no and how to pay etc don't they?

Yes - modes of payment and reference number - standard business policy.

Thanks, really odd because I've never had one before. I'll give them a call tomorrow, can't do any harm and will report back.

Yep. You were right, it took 4 phonecalls to 4 different departments to get an answer and then about 5 minutes of waiting for the customer service agent to reply "it's just for your records". Anyway, at least there's no charge.
