Sending buyer invoice directly

So in addition to ebay, I also sale on Etsy and have noticed that when I receive funds from sales there, there is no hold. Then it dawned on me that I was sending the invoices directly to the buy and not going through etsy. I tried this with ebay, sent a money request via paypal and selected services rather then goods and what do you know...no hold. Did I just get lucky?
