Network "Internet" Problems

I have a cable modem and Linksys router (4 of them all have the same problem). The problem I have now is when I change my MAC to acquire a new IP address and unplug my modem and router and plug them back in to get the new ip, it gets connection but the DNS server does not provide me the IP, so I can't connect to the Internet. This problem has been going on for a couple days now. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not. (usually if I wait 24hrs I can change my MAC and it will provide me a new IP) Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Just want to state: When I run my modem direct to the PC without the router I can connect to the internet. Or If I clone the MAC address of the router to have PC MAC, then the router works.

Yes, turn off your router for a minute. Turn it back on, reboot modem.

Doesn't work? reboot PC.

Same problem. Only way to make the router work at this point is if I clone the PC MAC address, otherwise with other MAC address I can't connect to the internet. Do you think the DNS server is blocking it?

A while back I had a similar problem thinking it was a virus or something. Then I stumbled upon after unpluging ( I switch off router, modem with a strip plug thing) after the MAC # change I just reboot my windows 7 PC and no more problems. It might help you I don't know.

I gave that a try and same problem. It's like the DNS server does not want to accept any MAC address but only the PC MAC.

I got it working now! Going to test it again. This time I did not unplug my modem out just unplugged the router after changing the MAC and plugged it back in and got connection!

What I found out is that the MAC address is causing it not to get connection. I tried some other random MAC and it worked. Tried a different one and it did not work. So I guess not all MAC address work. Even the ones that worked before won't work now or work sometimes.

Just change the last (to the far right) one digit every time for the router. 51,50, 49,...for every new account. As long as it's different that's all amazon/ebay bots care about... so far as I know. Changing the others I find makes the router stumble on mine.

I tried that as well, still won't work! Been trying to figure this out for past 6hrs. Have 3 new linksys routers and same thing. Maybe I should go by a net-gear and give it a try?

Maybe your internet provider changed from static to dynamic or back. one of those may make it hard to change IP's. I'm not sure on that though.

They use dynamic IP. Still have the problem with the netgear as well. Weird situation when it has worked a week ago. Now I cant get onto any of my accounts because I cant get connection when I change my MAC.

Went all the way to getting a new cable modem, and still no go! For some reason, when I change the MAC address it will not give me a IP to connect to the internet. Sometimes it goes but 99% of the time it does not! It has worked for past week, ever since I got my second internet provider but now since yesterday seems to not work. Anyone else have any advice? Thanks

are they both cable isp's? I have 2 diff types of connections and I have to change how my router connects in settings...88.32322% sure this is your problem

Sell4more2 02-05-2011 11:29 AM

Yes, they are both cable ISPs. I restored all my settings to factory/got a new modem registered it with the ISP. and only changed the last two digits of the MAC that Hercules had suggested and it has been working fine now. I guess when I completely changed the MAC address before it did something to the router where it wouldn't let me connect. I'm still curious to what settings you changed so I can use that if something goes wrong in the future. Thanks

call your isp tell them you put in a new router and you need them to send a reset singal to the modem and you done tried powercycling it it didnt work

seems like i had this same problem along time ago the way i fixed it was only power off your modem u dont have to turn the router off

heres what to do

1. clone your mac and hit save
2. goto the status on your router setup page and u will see DHCP release and DCHP renew. Click DHCP release then it will turn all to 0's on the ips and stuff show on the page.
3. now turn off modem and back on i use a power stirp for this so its like have a on and off switch.
4 now once the modem has booted up fully then go back to the status page on your router and keep click DHCP renew till a ip address shows up on the page. sometimes this will take many tires like upto 15 clicks before it gets a new ip but it will get it most the time then it will work fine and u should be able to go online with your new cloned mac address and have a new ip.

this method is used for linksys routers i have the newest one from walmart so i think its the same for ur router
