Trouble Changing My IP Address....
 

Hi Everyone,

Thank goodness I've found a way of getting back on Ebay/Paypal. The Ebay Stealth book is very informative and easy to read.

However, I have a problem. The changing of my IP address I'm finding very difficult to do. I have a computer linked up to the router and 2 laptops on wireless one of which is mine, the others are my parents. I tried to follow the advice in your guide but my router is strange. It's called 'Trendnet' and doesn't display a MAC Address anywhere. I tried to fiddle around on the Trendnet internet settings page only to have to call my internet provider to talk me through how to get back online because I did something strange with the internet during my attempt to change the IP address. Can anyone advise me on how to change my IP Address of just my laptop and not the other two computers? - don't wanna piss my dad off. An alternative would probably be internet cafe but I'm too lazy to keep going every time I want to log into ebay. Also I have a Vodafone Dongle. Is it possible everytime I connect to the internet through that it will come up with a new IP address automatically? I'm very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am anxious to get selling on Ebay.

Not all routers allow you to change the MAC.

The IP address you are thinking about is your internal, you are supposed to change your external. It is not the IP addresses of the computers/laptops connected but the IP address of the router that needs changing.

Your ISP assigns your router an IP address.

First you should start by going to IPBurger.com to record your IP.

Yes as shady states you should check and record your IP first of all.

If your using a dongle each time you reconnect you should get a new IP.

Yeah, IP Burger was the 1st place I went. I'm gonna try the dongle this afternoon and see how that goes. As for resetting the IP address thru changing the MAC add. That is proving to be too difficult so hopefully the dongle will work. Thank u.

^^What router do you have? Who is your ISP?

My router is Trendnet and ISP, Freedom 2 Surf. When I called up freedom 2 surf to ask if my IP address is static or dynamic they told me I don't need to know that. They made me feel that changing my IP address was an offence or sumthing

Anyway, have found a tiny reset button on the router and tried that?

Yeah. I hava feeling my IP address is static cuz I've also tried other ways of changing the address via network connections/ Internet Protocol. Could I request for my IP address to become dynamic or is there a way of changing a static IP address? Am so anxious to get onto the next parts and not be stuck on the first parts of attempting to get back on paypal/ebay. Want to be selling on Ebay by the weekend.:rant:

Don't rush things or you will make too many mistakes.

It is better to understand something than simply follow steps aimlessly.

Why are you trying to change your external IP through network connections? That is your internal IP not your external IP. External IP is all that matters.

Have you tried resetting via the small reset button on the router?

Yep, just reset the router, nothing's happening, my IP address is still the same. I'm doing all of this on my wireless laptop though. I think my ISP has given me a static IP address. You think the only way of changing my IP address is by giving them a call or is there another way.

I don't really wanna use my dongle as I have to pay £15 per month for it.

Another thing. I can go on Trendnet set up page, it says 'If your ISP requires a User Name and Password for Internet Access, select "Login".
Otherwise, select "No Login".'

The option for "No Login" gives me an option to do a dynamic IP address (RFC1483)

Also there's another option on that page: DSL Multiplexing Method which is set to VC-Based.

Once in there, I've managed to come across a MAC address and also a blank DNS field is displayed

I've got DSL Modulation set to Multimode.

But when I submit everything, the internet connection is lost

Ok. You can reset your router wirelessly via a laptop but how did you do it?

I just want to be certain you have done it correctly, as then it is likely you have static IP.

You have to login to your router to be able to do admin/advanced changes to the settings.

Can you change your MAC or does it not give you the option?

HAVE YOU TRIED RESETTING THE ROUTER BY THE SMALL BUTTON ON IT?

^You still have not told me. It will be the quickest test to see if you have a dynamic IP. Stop messing with the router settings if you do not know what you are doing.

Yeah it automatically logs me in.

I have reset the router at the back, the router is connected to the main computer. When I reset it, lights flashed, internet of course went off but came back on within a couple mins and everything went back to normal but nothing changed. IP address has stayed the same. Any other adjustments I do even when the Trendnet setup page gives me an option to change the IP address on another page, once after the changes are made, the router automatically resets and I'm left with no internet connection and have to put the default settings back in to get back online.

On the login option page once I've typed in my login details it says underneath

'IP Address (Dynamic) and its ticked. Maybe its cuz trendnet are letting my ISP set me an IP address.

It gives me an option to change the MAC address. I've tried different combos when I save them, the internet goes off and stays off.

Dude, I really think you should phone your ISP and ask :lol:

Who is your ISP anyway? I can't find it in the thread.

Are you connected to the router by a cable when changing settings, as apposed to wireless?

The ISP is Freedom 2 Surf. Yes am using the main computer that's connected to the router when making changes. I'll give them a call today to see if I can change it to a dynamic IP address.

I called my ISP.

They act very suspicious when I ask to change my IP address. Why do you think that is? do you think they think I'm dodgy?.

They also said that if I wish to change my IP address, I should do it through my router by re-configuring it. Shady, can you please help me out with this please hun?

^^ You shouldn't really phone them up asking to change your IP address, your right, ISP's seem to get suspicious when you phone them asking to change your IP :D

You are supposed to phone up and say "Hi, was just wondering if my contract with you has a dynamic or static IP package", something like this will give them no option but to tell you, well they should do anyway. Because you are paying for it and have other options available to you! :rant:

If they ever ask for a reason then tell them "privacy reasons". By the way, I cannot be bothered reading the whole thread again but have you definitely tried resetting your router/modem?

Do you have dsl or cable? And what model is your modem?

I thought about giving dial-up a try,because the ISP is not in my name and,I don't want to get the one who has their name on it in trouble.
