Or she could use a Money Sending Service such as Western Union or Money Gram. Although that way you'll get the payment instantly if not within a few hours, but they do have conversion + service charges which shouldn't be much.

munrz makes a good point on WU or Money Gram - most of the time though, their fees are higher but it is faster. I like bank to bank for lower fee option.
If it's a Bank to Bank transfer a few things come into play:
1) Are both the banks of the same company? If not you will pay a higher transfer fee since the banks are in a different countries.
2) She would probably send you the funds in $$$ through her bank whereas your bank account may or may not be in $$$ so there will be a conversion charge from $$$ to £££
And a few other things which I can't remember right now.
I'd suggest you guys talk to each of your banks and sort the details before the transfer.
