I think you can add a password to excel or word files. I did it back in college but I dont remember how too cuz I haven't dealt with those programs since finishing school.

i am writing some sensitive info in the file, and i will be storing it on a external hard drive and also editing it every week.

i need to make sure the file cannot be read by anyone but me.

You know the MS Office application suite have an inbuilt password ability on them already & you can create a very strong password by using a variation of digits/alpha numeric & numbers combinations, this would stop your average joe & opportunists who stumble across your documents.

You'd have to be saying or doing something high profile for you to be struck in a targeted fashion in a premeditated way & thereby requiring a more sophisticated approach.

I think the MS Office password capability would suffice for your requirements as described above.

This password feature does exist on version 2007 & onwards:
In the 2007 Microsoft Office system, you can use passwords to help prevent other people from opening or modifying your documents, workbooks, and presentations. Keep in mind that Microsoft cannot retrieve forgotten passwords.
The option will be in the menu tab, read that link up above, you will find it. You will not have seen it as these programs have a LOT of features that are 'hidden' or unknown by your average user BUT they are THERE.

i never knew that was there, i think this should be enough for what i need it for. i dont think you would be able to hack it either if using a very strong password.

thanks for that

that hack it is another issue all together, so i won't bother getting into that other than to say that for all intents & purposes office has what you needed/required.
